I was sleeved on Feb. 4th 2013. Just received the surgery and hospital stay bill paid by Kaiser. It states, 54,871.00. Kaiser settled for 16,974.00 + 192.00 due to contract they have with Dr. and hospital. Luckily my insurance paid every cent....no copay!!

Bare in mind these figures do not included 3 months of classes, blood work, EKG, several Dr. visits, etc. So this figure would be much higher.

55k is FAR more than what I have read on this site and internet.

What has everyone else paid?????

My dr charges self-pay patients about $15K...as with anything, the actual charges are going to be grossed up by the health provider (hospitals for example)...then, if the health provider is in-network with your plan, there will be a discounted charge that the insurance will cover...co-pays and deductibles then figure in depending on your specific plan and coverage...for example, my podiatrist's total charge each visit is around $250...then with the "discount," the billing to my insurance would be around $125, with my co-pay being around $13. Now, if I didn't have insurance for some reason, he would not charge me $250, but something closer to the $125....I think the same idea is involved with the self-pay patients and WLS

I called my dr office to see what they bill the insurance and I was told they bill 46k. I haven't had my surgery yet so I haven't seen what the total bill would be but that's what they said they bill to insurance. They also offer a discount for people that self-pay and that costs 15k.

I'm heading to Tijuana Mexico on Tuesday for my surgery. I paid $4,500. Covers ground transportation, two nights in the hospital, surgery, bloodwork, three nights in the hotel and also nutritionist consultations via telephone. there is an extra $1,000 charge for BMI over 49 and also they charge $500.00-$1,000 extra if they have to do an extensive hiatal hernia repair.

Thank you to everyone above.

I just received another benefits bill, $7,500.00 charged and 3,600.00 paid. So far that puts total paid by Kaiser at over 20k and roughly 62,000.00 charged. WOW!!!

My surgery bill came in the mail the other day. The total bill came to almost 90k! I had to pay 2500 after insurance but I look at it as an investment in myself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
