One of my incisions is leaking. Any advice?

Recommended Posts

I got sleeved 2/26. Doing really well. Feel great. Started liquid diet 2/15. I'm down 35lbs!

Problem: All of my incisions have healed except 1. It's the main one by my belly button. I thought it had healed, but I woke up last night to blood & Fluid ALL OVER my sheets. I put cotton balls on it, taped it up, & went back to bed. This morning there is a blood spot about the size of a half-dollar on the cotton balls. Can't visibly see any more oozing out. I washed it off & put "Tuff Skin" on it.

Any advice on how to care for it? I've got a spring break trip that my kids have been looking forward to for almost 9 months......I leave in 1 week for a 5 day stay in an indoor watermark. Hot tub, pool, etc.

I want to do whatever I can so I can make this heal up & not disappoint my kids.

If its not healed, waterproof bandages & wear a shirt?

Advice?

Hi Jason, that particular incision may be infected..I had the same issue when I had my band put in. Go to you doctor as soon as possible! If you can't get to your doctor soon, monitor your temperature...if you spike a fever go to emergency room. Try calling your doctors office and leave a message with the operator if they have one and maybe your doctor will call back.

You need to tell the doctor. A little clear ooze is normal. Full on bleeding, probably not.

I agree! Sounds like it may be infected. See your doctor, or at least call ASAP. Also, I was told no swimming til the scabs came off my incisions and if you do have an infection it may be a while before you can get in to a pool. Sorry!

I was told no baths, pools, or hot tubs for 6 weeks. As long as it isn't oozing like it is now, I would put a waterproof bandage over it and enjoy the time with my kids. I wonder if they are 100% waterproof? I wouldn't spend every minute in Water either...but, that's just me. Ultimately like everyone else said, talk to your doc and follow his advice.

Whatever you do please do not get into a pool with a possibly infected open wound .. That can get really really ugly fast.. Contact your doctor have him take a look at your incision..

I can tell you from past experiences with my cesarean sections, that most of that oozing and drainage is just liquified fat. Your body will absorb it or reject it. I would contact your MD, let him know what happened. He may choose to put you on antibiotics prophylactically. DO not use cotton balls-as a nurse those little fibers make me nervous in an open wound. Try non stick gauze pads such as Telfa.

Seriously liquid fat? What nursing school did you go to? I was thinking more along the lines of a seroma. I'm not his nurse or doctor so I can't give him a diagnosis. Just some advise you should know better..

There are some completely waterproof bandages available. I know Band-Aid makes one that's designed for larger wounds that I've used and they seal very tightly and stay totally dry.

I apologize socalchic. I was repeating the explanation that my OB gave when the exact thing happened to me, twenty years ago.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
