I had a hard time with Protein too. I do better now, I start each day with a pre-made Premier Protein from Sam's or Costco- they are $18 for 12 but they are the only ones I can tolerate and now they taste like chocolate milk to me- it just takes time to get used to the texture and flavor. But they have 30 grams of protein and help me get a start on my protein for the day. Find any Protein Drink you like and make yourself get used to it.

Does your dr require you to keep drinking the Protein drinks? For me I make sure my meals have lots of Protein. I choose things like fish, chicken or turkey (I can't have beef or pork yet for 1 more week) and Snacks I try to do a piece of turkey lunch meat or some Beans. I put protein first before anything else like veggies or fruit. I'm not saying I'm perfect and there are days I come up short and that's when I use the Protein shake to supplement. I like muscle milk vanilla ice cold! Cold being the key! I was sleeved 1/15 and lost 32lbs my first month (I only weigh at dr appts and I have one coming up) so 35lbs is great!

If you like tuna that is a great way to get a lot of protein with low calories. I mix a can of tuna with 1 boiled egg (chopped) and some mayo. That is about 32g of protein and only 170 calories. You may not e able to eat the entire amount at once but if you have a few bites at a time through the day you will get it all in. Tuna seems to be something that I can eat without any problems so I can usually eat half of it at lunch and then I take a few bites through the rest of the day until it is gone. If you are okay with fish then that is going to be one of your best sources of protein (salmon, tuna, etc.) and turkey. Just make sure you eat your meat (protein) or Beans before anything else to get your protein. I have a friend that had WLS and didn't follow anything she was supposed to she is 2 years out and weighs more now then when she had surgery but also has lost a lot of hair. If she pulls her hair back she looks bald in places. This woman had beautiful thick hair! I have been concentrating heavily on my Proteins and trying to find a good combination for me.

Can you describe what the isopure tastes like? I want to try different Proteins but you know how expensive they are and I don't want to waste money and product.

Buy a single bottle and try it. Doesn't taste great but I have had a lot worse. If you mix it with apple juice or gatoraide it's fine. I am drinking that as we speak/type.

eggs, meat (tuna, salmon & chicken breast give you the most bang for your buck), Peanut Butter, cottage cheese, yogurt (greek is best)...these are all great sources of Protein. I haven't done it myself, but I've seen people talking about adding Protein Powder to their yogurt to boost the protein. Also, the Livestrong website has a pretty good basic list. There are LOTS of high protein meal cookbooks on Amazon, and as I mentioned in another post the other day, there is even a "Dummies" book for people who have had weight loss surgery. There are lots of tasty looking recipes in it.

I was having the same problem, but I froze the apple whey shot and it is a good cold treat. I ate it with a spoon and it works today is the first day I have been able to do the Protein. So far today I have downed 42 grams of protein.

Some great suggestions here for you to follow. Since you are only about 6 weeks post-op you need to be careful that you are following your surgeon's post-op food plan and not introducing solid foods or difficult to digest food too quickly.

You stomach has been through a MAJOR TRAUMA and you need to give it time to heal properly. It can take up to 6 months for the swelling to completely subside and the healing to complete!

My second focus is to suggest you adjust your state of mind..........you've lost 35 lbs! In 6 weeks! When was the last time you lost 6 lbs/week? Not losing much? Wow! I am 10 months post-op and my average loss right now (over those 10 months) is 2.85 lbs/week.

You are losing LOTS! Believe me!

And if you happen to be stuck (or stalled) right now, that is completely normal. Type "Week 3 stall" into the search box in the top right corner of this website. You'll see alot of people stop losing weight temporarily around this time period.

It's great that you're looking for advice on protein intake (perhaps you should start logging your food on a website/app such as MyFitnessPall?). Just remember that your weight loss is a journey that is non-linear and you will have stalls, periods of fast loss (that sometimes don't make sense!) and some slow periods (but still losing). Your body is trying to figure out what's going on. It's making adjustments and adapting to it's changing physiology and energy stores.

Give your body time, and your mental health with thank you!

Good luck!

I counted and you just passed six weeks. At six weeks I started adding regular food back to my diet. I hated Protein Shakes, I found that the Protein Shots AKA protein bullets, save me!! Some say the 'protein isn't as good' but I say, "It is better to get 60+ grams in with a bullet and food rather than NOT getting it because those darn shakes gag you!!! LoL Worked for me and I never lost my hair and labs have ALWAYS been good! I got mine from GNC, blue raspberry was the least offensive. They aren't good, but 42 grams is packed into about 3.5 oz. I'd take a few sips in the morning, a few at noon and finish it off that evening. I'd hold my nose and breath and take the sips. Then, just like a kid, I'd rinse my mouth out with water!! That said....let me tell you what else I did. From almost the first week, I started and ended every day with 8 oz of skim milk. I still do this, almost 3 years out. My go to foods were:

eggs (this early you probably cannot finish an entire egg, or it will take a while)

1% cottage cheese (breakfast of champions!!)

steamed shrimp (i still keep a bag in my freezer) seafood seems to be THE easiest meat to eat.

Canned tuna (an entire can is 1/2 cup) At first I could only eat about an eighth, I add 1.5 TB of Lite Miracle Whip to the entire can. At this point, I can eat the whole can for lunch, I do not eat bread with it. If I want crackers (8 - 10) I'll eat 1/4 cup....half the can.

Tons of protein in all the things I've listed.

I also started eating beef, pork and chicken. Cooking a lean pork chop or chicken breast in the oven, on top of the stove or in a crock pot.....with a can of FF cream of mushroom or cream of chicken Soup, is good. (add a can of Water as well) You'll have 'gravy' and it makes the meat 'softer' - easier to eat.

Good luck!!! I hope this helps a little!

What you said is good advice. I'm almost 3 years out and I STILL keep an on line food log. I also measure or weigh all my food when I'm eating at home. Eating out is a little trickier. I started using fitday.com prior to surgery but just a few days ago, I started tracking on myfitnesspal.com I like them both, they are different, but not. :) I just want to make sure to keep track of Protein and calories. It's my new way of life. I'm in control.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
