has anyone had 2 or more ports replaced due to infections?

Recommended Posts

Hello..It has been a real long time since I have posted. But now I want to get some insight from anyone who has had their port removed

more thatn 2 x and been successful at last with their 3 or 4th maybe?

I have been thru alot this year since Dec 25th last year 2005. being banded Dec 12 2005 i had a port infection landing me is hospital on Christmas Day and septic.....upon admission my b/p was 67/37. I was told I had MRSA, anyways 10 days in hosp after having port removed in emergency surgery...I came home with an intrevenious antiboitic on the pole i had to drag around for 26 days. I decided to get a 2nd port put in March 1,2006. Not good......it was placed under my rib and caused so much pain for 2mos and 3 weeks i was turning crazy and elected to get it out again. The doc left the band intact and i had 70% restriction....but emotionallly i was a wreck and carbs are easy to consume as we know when stressed and depressed. I have gained 12 lbs back. I was told there was no need for and antibiotic this time and just taking out the source of infection will let the body heal. The tests run on my port and skin showed heavy colinization for MRSA again.Well that was May 25th and now I want to get the port put back in again. So I have a date set for Nov.29th...(6 mos later)I am very apprehensive that I Will get infected again even though we are doing things to prevent this like

1. wash 1 week proior to surgery with hibiclens antibatcterial cleanser

2. on day of surgery doc will give me I.V of the newest version of an antibiotic to fight any MRSA infection

3. Doc will place port under layer of muscle instead ,due to better blood circulation instead of first layer of skin.........

I sure pray this works and I can get on with my life.

My surgeon is very knowledgable with this surgery,,that isn't a fear..it's the port not healing up again....if not it will be the end of my lap band experience cuz the doc will take the band out . If there is any info or any other docs reading this I am open to all information and encouragement provided:)

I did manage to lose initially with my band ,46 lbs but gained back 12. I need to lose 60 more. Thanks to all in advance!! NIkki in Fl

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
