H Pylori post sleeve...unable to take crushed meds! Help!

Recommended Posts

I was told my stool test pre op tested negative but my blood work pre op tested positive. Needless to say, the surgery was done before I even knew the results. I was given the 3 meds and was told to crush them and mix them with my soft foods. Well, I made several attempts with different foods and everything would just come right back up! I'm two weeks post op and just doing my best not to dehydrate. Has anyone had any luck just swallowing the pill whole? I feel I have no other alternative at this point. I'm very discouraged :(

I had surgery in TJ, Mexico. We were given antibiotics to take right after surgery. The pills were HUGE! They were like horse pills! I thought, no way can my sleeve handle this! The trick was to take about 2 Tablespoons of maylox about 5 minutes before the pill. I took the entire course of antibiotic without trouble that way, and that was literally the day after getting out of the hospital. Maybe that will help you! Good luck!

Wow - do your foods come up without the crushed pills too? I've found sugar-free, fat-free pudding works well with crushed pills - masks the taste really well.

The food barely makes it down...all comes up and then here comes the dry heaves. I've tried sf pudding, apple sauce and yogurt. My poor tummy is so sore now.

I have an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow so I'm just going to have to let him know I have to swallow them. I was so desperate I told them I would go in daily for IV antibiotics and that says a lot for me since I hate needles!

I was able to start swallowing my pills whole the day I left the hospital. When I showed my surprise about this, my surgeon said that's why I chose the sleeve, so that I could do thinks like that! I have had no trouble with pills at all, and I even swallow them two at a time sometimes (capsule size). He just said if they're very large to cut them in half.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
