Gastroparesis- Improvement after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I have diabetic gastroparesis and am having VSG surgery in the next 2-4 weeks. Have any of you had this condition and if so, what kind of improvement did you see after surgery?

Thank you,

Jay

I got gastroparesis as a result of the sleeve. Managing it now with meds and botox injection . I hope getting the sleeve helps your gastroparesis. Good luck!

I am 6.5 months out since surgery and have not ever had one symptom of gastroparesis since surgery. Life is good. Cured.

I hope no one minds me reviving this topic. I haven't been diagnosed with gastroparesis, but I'm 99% sure I have it. I'm hesitant to see a specialist and get diagnosed because I don't want anything to interfere with surgery... But reading that several of you above said surgery improves it, that gives me hope. I don't get bouts of gastroparesis very often; maybe just once or twice a year with varying levels of severity.

Anyway, is there anyone else who had/has gastroparesis, who has either had surgery or is approved for surgery despite it?

I was diagnosed with gastroparesis only a few months ago. But I had so many other health factors, it didn't stop me from having the RNY procedure. I am 11 days out of surgery and today I could just feel the food sitting in my colon/other parts.

So I did what I do when I feel that way. I took a Linzess. I don't know if you've had one of those before but it quite powerful. There was an old Saturday Night Live skit waaaaaay back with Dan Ackroid selling a product called Super Colon Blow. That should be the name for this medicine. I ONLY take it when I KNOW I am going to be home and close to a bathroom because explosive diarrhea should be done in the privacy of one's home if at all possible.

I am looking forward to being a few more days out of surgery and seeing if the gastroparesis returns, makes the occasional visit, or disappears completely.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
