Can't Decide! So confused!

Recommended Posts

Hello from SC! I have a surgery date of May 28th...although I still cannot decide WHICH surgery to have. My first choice was the sleeve, but after my psych consult last week, I am beginning to second guess that decision. The psychiatrist I saw claims that 90 percent of her post-op patients are disappointed in their weightloss and the rate at which they are losing. Since there are no long-term studies on the sleeve, I am curious as to what you all have experienced with the sleeve decision. How has your weight loss been? Slow? Any regrets/wish you had the RNY instead?

I'm only 1 week out but I've already lost 16 pounds. I think I'm going to love my sleeve.

I am 5 weeks tomorrow, and I have lost about 25 since surgery. Everyone varies, and there are plateaus and stalls for both surgeries. Whichever you choose, it really helps to have after pictures. I take one every wednesday (give or take a day), that way when i get discouraged that i think i should be loosing a lb a day, i can look at the pictures and notice the difference :) The biggest thing is getting into a long term eating habit that will help you succeed for life, not just for a year or two.

Gastric bypass has a tiny bit higher loss percentage - but the sleeve is very close behind, with many less complications. For some the weight doesnt fall off overnight - some lose faster. I am not at goal but am super happy with my choice.

I'm down 62 lbs in 23 weeks. If I were to go to the gym I'm sure I would have loss more. I'm very happy with my sleeve. After researching the Lap-band, I found to many problems with it, scar tissue, slipping, etc. If known people who have had the bypass then they have become addicted to pain-meds and have gained some of the weight back...

My ticker has my weight loss, 10 lbs lost pre op......75 lbs total, surgery 8-21-12. Pics are in my profile under 'gallery' to compare. RNY might lose a bit faster initially, but as my surgeon just reminded me at my 6 month post op visit this past Monday (which was really 6 1/2 months post op), the sleeve patients are doing just as well as his RNY patients. Studies have been done, do some research, they go back 5-10 yrs. As with each surgery, it's a tool, and we need to do the work as well. Best of luck with your decision, I'm sure you'll do what is best for you!! :-)

I am down 46 in 2.5 months. I am freaking thrilled. 90% is a ridiculous number unless those people she was speaking of have extremely unrealistic expectations.

My main deterrent to picking RNY was the rerouting of the intestines, increased chance of complications, food malabsorption, and that it is mandatory that you have to take Vitamin supplements for the rest of your life. It just sounded scary. The sleeve is much simpler, they just trim off part of the stomach.

And it cured my nearly constant hunger caused by the stomach produce hormone, ghrelin. With the removal of the stomach, the amount of ghrelin produced is very limited. I haven't felt hunger since surgery. With RNY, the stomach is not removed, just bypassed, so it will continue to produce ghrelin at the same volume.

I love the sleeve! I am 7 1/2 months out and down 106 pounds! I have friends who have had gastric and haven't done near as well. It has a lot to do with following the plan! It is a personal decision though so good luck! You will choose correctly for you:)

I'm slow...but steady! & I will take it! I am actually losing at the same rate as my Sis-n-law who was my same BMI & weight & had the Bypass a yr ago! She WISHES now that she'd had the sleeve! She has bad dumping syndrome & malabsorption issues!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
