Crap... worried and disappointed

Recommended Posts

Long story short... I have (and consistently have had) a BMI of 36-37. I have Aetna insurance and was hoping that I would be diagnosed with sleep apnea to use as my comorbidity. Got the resuts of my sleep study and it was clear :( . I know I am continuing on with my 3 month multi disciplinary and hoping it somehow gets approved. I have started to formulate a letter listing my other conditions and hoping it will push it through. I have a history of depression (documented that it stems from my weight), spinal stenosis and herniated discs. It also appears from my most recent blood work that the I have pre-diabetes and very high triglycerides.

Just hoping for some words of wisdom or suggestions I guess. Feeling pretty defeated.

the fact that your bmi is over 35 and your pre-diabetic you would think that was enough for you to pass, fingers crossed for you that you will get it x

Thank you... the pre-diabetes is a recent find so I'm hoping that will do it. It's so hard but I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

Stay positive. You can't do more than you're doing and unfortunately you don't have any control over the insurance companies.

I have to say your health system over there sounds stinky!

I have Aetna & had no comorbitites! I did have to appeal & wrote a letter like your talking about! I also listed my family history which is Very high in diabetes, hypertension, & heart disease! I also pointed out the fact that high triglycerides & cholesterol are indeed considered cardiac disorders! I was approved within a week!

Perhaps you should have your dr remeasure your height (slouch a bit and remove your shoes) 1 inch makes a substantial difference in BMi .

I also have atnea and was approved 2 weeks ago and my date is march 20 start diet tomorrow; my bmi is 36 and I also wrote a letter and was approved the first time; I think they are no as hard to get approved as most insurance; just write a letter why u want this and all the different diet plans u have done and explain that the injections are painful and phentermine gave u heart palps. And just make it sound real good; hope this helps

I have a question for those of you who wrote to Aetna. Had your BMI >35 been documented by physicians for 2 years or more? I decided to self pay because the coordinator at my surgeons office wouldn't even submit to Aetna because my physician-documented weights didn't show BMI >35 in 2011. I'm wondering if I should have tried harder to get approved before throwing in the towel and paying

Thanks everyone :) I just finished my letter and talked to my coordinator. She said we will make the best case we possibly can and hope for the best although there are no guarantees. So... I just have to wait... and wait... and wait. It won't even be submitted until mid-April.

I have totally thought about the weights (and I would do it in a heartbeat) but I don't think that would help my case since I have never been above 40 BMI.

My BMI hasn't been below 35 in over 8 years. I have records showing it between 36 - 37 for the last several years, never going below 35 and never going above 40. If your BMI is below 35, I don't think there is a chance to get approved with Aetna. They will approve at above 35 with a comorbidity though or above 40 withough a comorbid.

You may want to look at your triglycerides and colesterol levels and see if they're high. If they are, and you have an apple sort of shape then you have "metabolic syndrome" which is considered a co-morbidity by just about everyone. Rofl, that's what got bcbsnc to approve mine since I also flunked the sleep apnea test! Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
