Having my band removed

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Nov.9th and have already decided to have it removed. I was not prepared for the onslaught of anxiety and emotion. Thank God the band is easy to take out.

Since you've gone to the trouble and expense of having the band, why not give it 6-8 months? Get some help and counseling for the anxiety and emotions.

There are so many benefits, why not go for it?

I too would support you in giving yourself a bit more time. It has not even been 30 days. What is giving you the most trouble? Maybe we can help. Just a thought....

Yes, don't give up girl. Ask your doctor to introduce you to others who have the band. Keep talking to people on here. You've already made it though the tough part, making the decision to have the surgery. You just have to hang in there.

You had the bravery to get the band. I know you're brave and strong enough to work it out.

Stay strong baby girl. You CAN do this.

It's too soon to give up on the band. You haven't given it or you a chance. Why don't you wait until you recover from the surgery and see how you feel? Get some support from others to feel less anxious. For most of us it was an easy procedure and recovery.

Wishing you the best

A lot of people go through a "What the fook did I just do to myself?" stage. Especially if they didn't take a lot of preparation time. It's completely natural.

I'm not going to try and talk you out of the band removal. If you really want it out, then have it out. But at least make sure you've considered your motives, and more importantly, considered how you're going to reflect upon your decision a year or two from now.

don't give up on the band---to most it is the miracle they have been praying for...you must have had a psyc evluation in your process--what was the outcome of that input?? the worst is over--now you just have to follow the plan...is there something i am missing??? I don't understand !!

I have to agree with giving it more time. Any big change can cause the anxiety and emotions. Lots of surgeries in general cause a period of time like this, plus the idea of not dealing with things with food anymore.

My best recommendation would be this; leave the band in, it wont do much by itself with no fill. Then, when you feel a little more calm, and things have settled down, go back and start getting fills.

It is absolutely of course, up to you, but I imagine you posted to get some input, so there's mine. ;)

I agree, don't take it out already. Once you have recovered and the swelling is gone and without a fill, it will feel just like you never had it put in. Just keep it until you are ready to get a fill and start working with it. It would be a shame if you took it out now and then later had regrets.

If you leave it in and dont get a fill then you can live with it for a few months/years to decide if you wish to have fills or live with it unfilled. My band unfilled is like I never had one!!

PLEASE STOP and reconsider the removal so soon. Live with it unfilled and then later when you are thrilled its still there and you are ready to use it as it is intended- (counseling behind you and with each step forward you take) you can move forward!!

I would seek counseling ASAP!! Your surgeon can get you in touch with someone- if you need help this board is GREAT!!

Good Luck- DONT make any hasty decisions!!

Trust me on this one, I've seen it a lot...don't have it removed give it a little time. I've had several people tell me they want it out a few weeks after it was put in, but they have all come to love their band with time!

This reminds me so much of that commercial on TV where the guy buys the painting at auction and then turns around to sell it right away....

It wouldn't be smart to get the band removed before you gave it a try. Just wait on doing anything until you heal up. Then you can have time to see how much actual upheaval there will be in your life.

I swear - there isn't that much after the initial healing phase has passed.

Hugs.

It's definatly and adjustment thing.

You have to mentally come to terms with not eating so much. I have yet to give anything up. I can have a bite or two of just about anything, I just have to remind myself where to stop.

One thing that people don't realize often is the fact that when you decrease your calorie intake it's quite common to go through a depression phase.

So give it time.

It's hard.....honey I know. But even if you just leave it in and don't have a fill, eventually you'll get a decent appetite back. Trust me, I know. I got pregnant after losing 60 lbs in 6 months. I'm almost empty now, and have put on 20 lbs. (10 last month). After everything, it can be disconcerting. But I have the rest of my life to lose this weight and only now to take care my baby.

Listen to Dr. C. He's my doctor. He's good and he knows what he's talking about.

Hi,

Yes it can be removed but my removal was way worse than the placing of the band so if I were you I would rethink that and remember why you had it placed in the first place and give yourself sometime. trust me it gets better. Tracey

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
