JP69 116 Posted March 5, 2013 My Dr put me on Protonix, after I was released from hosp. It for heartburn and the buildup if gases because we eat so little, our stomachs still produce extra gases. I have not had any heartburn or acid reflex since before surgery. I tale each morning half hour begore I eat anything. Call Dr and see what he recommends. Good luck

Fiddleman 4,376 Posted March 5, 2013 Have you tried some tums? They might help and actually taste kind of good.
sleever10 109 Posted March 5, 2013 I take Prilosec morning and night and Zantac in the afternoon. My doc actually said to not take Tums because while they help for the short-term, in the long-term they cause more problems. I don't know if this is true or not. Hope you find relief soon - I have been there.

SaraB 38 Posted March 5, 2013 I pop Zantac like its going out of style. I probably take 4 150 mg pills a day. Without it my throat hurts and I feel empty in my stomach. I have an appt next week to see my pp to get a prescription strength acid reducer.

Yikes! Cancer and heart attack are long term side effects that were never explained when the doctor told us to take PPI for up to a year. I did know about the malabsorption part. There is a neat graphic that summarizes all the long term side effects on the linked page above. Take a look! I still get some burning sensations in my throat if I forget to take the PPI for a day, but am now concerned that the recommended dose time is max 6 weeks. Fiddleman 4,376 Posted March 5, 2013 I use acid reducers and they work wonderful. Curious, how long have you been using acid reducers for? I am at about 8 months. Do you think there is any truth behind the article I posted above?
VSGJean 68 Posted March 5, 2013 I started having acid reflux problems for about 15 years. I started on Protonix and that quit working I switched to Nexium, then my wonderful insurance company decided that I didn't need to take Nexium anymore, that OTC drugs should "fix" my problem!! My Dr told me to double the OTC dosage so I did and the Zantac and Prilosec worked fine. Like I said before, since my surgery I take my tummy meds only once every 10 to 14 days. My doctor warned my that my acid reflex would be worse after surgery but it's not. Thank the good Lord! I used to use that several times a week and now its every great once in awhile. I will try to take a look at that article.

Ljp 157 Posted March 5, 2013 Okay I read the article and realize that using those medication repeatedly can block malabsorbtion but continual acid that comes up caused by acid reflux can cause cancer. I think a person would need to weigh the odds between the two and see how often they are using the medication. I dont take even take then weekly now but prior to surgery I did.
