I am a new sleeve, one week out. OK'd for pureed/mush diet. It seems like different programs offer different strategies on starches. Are mashed potatoes okay? How about pulverized mac and cheese? Don't want to go down the tubes with carbs, as that is part of what got me in trouble in the first place. But can anyone offer their expierence on whether or not they include carbs.... potatoes, rice, Pasta, in their diets post op, and when???? Thanks for any advice/support anyone can offer.

you should discuss this really with your nutritionist and come up with a balanced nutritional plan that will work for you. Generally speaking high carb foods like what you mention should be avoided initially after sleeving. They certainly can be added back to your diet once you are on your way (like 3-4 months) if you choose to go that route. But right now, you should be focusing on getting in your Protein, drinking your Water and letting your sleeve heal up. I gave up potatoes, rice and Pasta during my pre-op period and have no plans to add that back into my diet, (along with Mac and Cheese). Those type of foods really add no nutritional value except for the added carbs. If you must eat them, try to eat red potatoes with the skin on vs. gold or white mash (Cauliflower is great mashed btw), if you must eat rice, try wild brown or quinoa, and for pasta, try making your own with spinach, beets or any other good vegetables.

Thank you for reinforcing what I really know, but was looking for validation to cheat. My nutritionist said a few potatoes were okay, as long as I got my Protein in. But from all my reading, I know I should stay away.

I also gave those things up for a month pre-op, and lost 17 pounds. Appreciate your advice...

Thank you for your honesty. It is funny how many new sleevers do the same thing, but get upset when their "desires" aren't validated. If we really want to be successful with this deal, we know when we are doing things we shouldn't be doing.

Again, thanks for your honesty. Really appreciate it.

I think it's almost a denial stage that we "newbies" go through. Hoping to find that silver lining. ;). OF COURSE we all know (or at least, I hope we all know) what is allowed and what is not when it comes to the topic of carbs and sugar.

I have moments where I catch myself mentally "cheating", but know that I cannot and WILL not do! I actually went to the fridge today and pulled out ingredients to make a sandwich and then realized what the heck I was doing!!! It was such a slip of habit. I felt like such a dummy after I did that!

At 5 months and a very restrictive sleeve, I have mashed potatoes with my solid meats and fish -it helps it go down. As far as bread (I only have a high fiber/low carb wrap-can eat about 60% for lunch)-my dr. said to avoid bread for first year. Pasta and rice do not go down well-so I avoid on my own. I have a Fiber One brownie and a Special K thin crisp every day which seems to curb cravings for carbs, sweets, chocolate and crunch! My caloric intake is low so these 'treats' haven't messed my weight loss, but I'm looking forward to eating more veggies and healthy grains when I'm able.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
