I'm in the process of having vSG and I'm having a lot of people tell me that it's better to have a baby before the surgery then after. I'm 38 years old and want to have one more baby but I'm worried about putting more weight on my frame and possibly having a high risk pregnancy. I'm 318 pounds .

All the doctors I have spoke to in reference to this all recommend pregnancy be two years after VSG. They have said that the babies are healthy with no issues. My two cents would be after surgery ;)

I agree, I am also 38 and would like to have 1 more, I only have one. But I decided that the baby as well as me would be healthier if I dropped the weight first. My start weight was 276 and I am 2wks post op and at 248. My doctor also recommends 2 years after surgery which is fine because it will give me time to reach my goal weight, learn how to eat properly and healthy and lessen my chances of diabetes during pregnancy because of my weight. The choose is totally a personal one and you will need to decide what is best for you, but I felt it was best to wait. Many women conceive after 40 without any issues.

I am 38 as well and we want one more. My doctor said 18-24 months after. I think we will start trying at around 12-15 months. It is middle ground and not sure how long it might take. I had my first at 30 and that was a bit ago.

I am 24. I am 29 Wks post op and I am 27 Wks preg. I had an IUD in and still got pregnant so this baby was not in the plan for now. We are ecstatic though. She is a healthy baby girl. We have had no problems even though I was only 2 Wks post op when I got pregnant. Although we have had great luck I will always recommend waiting two years after surgery. I started at 330 lbs and I am now 220 lbs and this has been the best pregnancy I have ever experienced. It's my third. Although I am still over weight, losing the weight has kept me comfortable when before this wasn't possible at 330 lbs.

I also say wait as long as possible post op. I conceived at two years post op and there were still challenges.

You need to consider the risks of your weight vs. the odds of your fertility decreasing with your OB/GYN before making this decision. It is never the ideal to conceive while obese, but fertility comes with a time line, and a sleeve works no matter your age.

So, have a really serious sit-down with your gynecologist is my advice. As an obese woman you're at risk for certain complications during pregnancy. If you're in generally good health otherwise but have suspect fertility, it might be better conceive now.

I reached goal before getting pregnant and in my case (my high weight was 280s, I was 242 preop) this pregnancy was no less complicated or uncomfortable, but your situation could be totally different. I will say that watching the scale go up post VSG has been far more challenging mentally than I ever expected, but unlike my previous pregnancies (80 and 97 pound gains) I have been able to keep my weight to a normal pregnancy gain. That's one big plus, but still no easier to see on the scale!

Good luck,

~Cheri

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
