When are we really in the "clear"?

Recommended Posts

When can I safely rest assure that I'm not going to have and major or serious complications from this surgery? I'm 11 days out and always think about leaks and scary things like that.

Is it weeks months years?

My surgeon said that after 6 weeks, the staple line should be completely scarred over. This is when I was cleared for physical activity, also.

My doctor said three months as well, I still find it funny that all drs have different after care instructions and time lines.

My dr said after 2 week ur stomach is almost completely healed an that there is no chance for a leak. Ill feel better next week (which will be 3 weeks for me) an my surgeon teaches dr ALL over the world...I also had my surgery thru in incision in my belly bottom which a lot of people don't have...guess it jus depends

I had my 30 post op appointment yesterday and specifically asked if I am out of danger for leaks and stricture. I was told I should not be concerned about that anymore, but full healing and scarring for the sleeve is about 8 weeks. I think I might have an aggressive surgeon because I was also given clearance to begin cardio 1 week post op and yesterday, I was given clearance to begin strength training.

It seems all surgeons have their own take on things and it is possible they tailor it to the patient. Fortunately, I am feeling good, so I just go with his instructions.

This is all awesome info. It is weird how all drs are different. I have my one month post op on the 28th. Will see what my dr says :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
