When can we stop being fearful of leaks?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading some posts about leaks and needless to say, the thought scares the heck out of me. I was self pay in Mexico and I don't have health insurance (don't judge) so I've tried o research the best I can on my own. I've heard people say your body is healed at 6 weeks but does that also mean your staple line is healed then? I want to make sure to be very cautious until I'm in the clear. I almost don't want to eat any solid food at all until I know I'm safe cos it scares me. I'm one of those lucky ones that so far can tolerate anything and although I've stuck to my post op diet, it still frightens me because sipping annoys me since I feel like I don't need to sip. Can taking normal drinks instead of sips cause a leak?? I know none of you are doctors but I still like to read all the input I can get. I am able to contact everyone in Mexico that was part of my surgery and I plan to do so but I just wanted to hear from you guys a little too. Thanks :)

Honestly I stopped sipping about 9 hours after surgery. I wasn't getting enough fluids. You can take normal drinks, just don't gulp, and pause every half cup or so. Just to give the Fluid a chance to pass. I also used and still use a straw.

Oh thank goodness. I'm definitely not getting enough Fluid. Only about 35-40 oz a day. I was scared to use a straw cos the air can give you gas and I got plenty of that lol. So what is the portion size for drinks and food? Everyone says to measure stuff but I don't know how much of stuff I'm supposed to have

Wow 6 years seems pretty far out. I'm gonna be in fear forever lol. I did just email the dr who assisted my surgery so I will let you know what he says.

The 6 week number is specifically related to your staple line. It is considered healed at 6 weeks. Full healing, meaning all swelling is gone, etc will take between 6 months & 1 year.

But the probability of springing a new leak after 6 weeks is almost non existent.

Ok so I should just be extra cautious for 6 weeks. Thanks for the reply. Why does swelling take so long o disappear?

You should have received an extensive food guide/list when you left the hospital from Dr Garcia, maybe you should read it. Many on this site are NOT experts and may give you wrong advice.

Follow your doctor's recommendations, of course, but most of us are out of the woods for leaks by six months. Other complications can still happen, but they are definitely uncommon. I've heard of people's stomach twisting, abcesses, etc. But those complications are even more rare than incidents of leaks.

I did read it, it doesn't say anything about leaks. Like I said in my post, I just wanted opinions and planned on contacting one of my drs.

I asked my doc about leaks at my 6 week appointment and he basically said that he's not concerned about them at this point. Not saying it's impossible, obviously, but that was his reaction.

Okay thanks. I thinks most people's doctors are saying 6 weeks and complications after that are rare. Thanks for letting me know

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
