Hi, I am meeting my surgeon this week. I'm ready for this but I am so anxious about not being able to drink diet coke. Isn't that crazy? I drink it all day everyday. I know it is terrible for me yet I still do it. Just as I keep making bad food choices. I'm scared that I will go through some sort of withdraw from it. If anyone else has this problem and overcame it please share with me!

You probably will. I found, after years of being a Diet Coke drinker that the aspartame in the Diet Coke was causing neurological issues (muscle twitches, weakness.. etc..) and I had to quit. It was the worst week EVER. Worse than when I quit smoking. But I did it and haven't had a Diet Coke in almost 3 years. Diet Coke is very very bad for you. Worse than regular coke (I think) because of the artificial sweetener. Just Google Aspartame and see the dangers, they are very real and shouldn't be ignored.

I was a diet coke addict before surgery, and I'm a diet coke addict after surgery. :) I gave it up in the early stages of post op, maybe 3 months if that. I have been drinking it ever since with no issues. I admire all of you who kicked the habit! It hasn't hindered my weight loss efforts in the slightest, and although it may not be good for me, I figure I could be doing a lot worse if this is the worst indulgence I have. Haha. Cheers (as I hold up my glass!)

I've tried the carbonated beverages and was unimpressed by how different they tasted. I loved diet cherry Pepsi and coke zero had one the other day and it just tasted like Syrup. I did try a ginger ale which I wasn't a fan I before and it helped settle my stomach. I'm still afraid of carbonation though!

I have been a coffee drinker since a very young age. Now that I have had the surgery I don't even want coffee. The hormones that used to tell me that I wanted coffee are just not there anymore. I have no cravings other than for mashed potatoes and gravy.

I was an advid Diet Pepsi fan. Diet Pepsi and Marlboro Reds was my signature. Last year I started cracking down on overall espenses so a 12 can pack of Diet Pepsi per day was first to go. I went to Kool Aid and Monster Coffees after that. Now its just Water for me, with some coconut Water or flavored water if I am feeling something different.

Earlier this year I stopped smoking and yes, it does add up.

The first couple of days were hard. Small headache, irritable, thirsty. I have try a Diet Pepsi in the past couple of months and it doesn't taste the same. I won't go back. I got through it and so can everybody. Good luck.

I am pre-op and was really worried that I couldn't give up diet pop.

I have successfully weened myself off by switching to tea. Now I am obsessed with tea and have quite a variety. I have a 2 liter pitcher that I keep in the refrigerator wirh fresh brewed ice tea. Fortunately, I have never been a sweet tea drinker (even though I'm southern to the bone).

I drink a variety of green, black and oolong teas. I sometimes add in herbal infusions. (ex 4 bags green tea, 1 bag mint to make 2 quarts).

Tea has a range of caffeine content from high to Decaf so I can adjust depending on my needs. It is also making it easier for me to go decaf.

If you *really* want the diet coke, go to bed bath & beyond, but the soda stream brand diet coke Syrup (for the soda maker) and mix it with just Water. Tastes like flat diet coke but no bubbles to kill the sleeve!

oh honey, i was THE pop addict of my entire town! i drank nearly a GALLON of REGULAR Mtn Dew every day for the past 10 years. i was taking Metformin for PCOS and passed right by the diet for the full-sugar option. I had a generic 44 oz cup that i filled in the early morning, on my mid morning break, at lunch, right after work, and again for mid-evening.

i gave up my pop a week before i started my pre op diet. i had MANY MANY 'last' pops. i even sent my hubs out for a midnight pop run two nights before the last one, and sat it on my bedside and woke up during the night several times to drink it.

on a tuesday (my busiest and most stressful day at work) i had my final pops, on wednesday i woke up, took 2 excedrin for a little caffeine-and to help with the impending headache- and took a Diet Snapple Arnold Palmer to work.

the end. end of pop. that was it. no major headache, no withdrawals. no major issues at all. almost anticlimactic if i say so!

i will be honest and say that i DO miss the sort of 'refreshing' bubbles and zing of a pop. right now it's just not worth it to me, maybe down the road i will have a sip to see if my love is still there. i doubt it, i'm loving how i look and feel WAY more!

Myself, I was a Diet Mt Dew addict. I'm 5 months post-op, and I occasionally buy one, but only end up sipping a bit. It makes you feel really full and "burpy", which I've never cared for. I still love the taste. I sometimes let it go flat and drink. You could always do that, if you love the taste.

Funny, I worried about the same thing. I used to drink Diet Dr. Pepper from morning until night. I gave it up cold turkey and was fine. I think my mind was just ready to do this. I'm so sick of feeling this way that I didn't care. You'll find you're stronger than you think are you are!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
