Another diet coke addict here. I used to drink 1 to 2 big 2-liters a day. I loved the tingly burn on my tongue from the CO2. I learned that I can not have carbonation and decided right then to stop....then another 2 weeks went by before I finally stopped cold turkey about a week ago. I have started drinking coolaid made with splenda and different flavors of herbal tea. I think i will choose my new addiction, it will be good loose leaf herbal teas.

I'm not going to let it stop me. I'm just worried about the withdrawal. I think I will miss the diet coke more than I will the food. The thought induces real anxiety. I'm glad I am not alone. I'm going to buy a big insulated cup today and some flavoring for Water. I do enjoy sweet tea. I am southern so it is always available. Ahhh! The emotions I am going through are all over the place!

I did have a crazy headache for the first few days of my pre-op diet. But now...6 weeks after surgery, I am diet coke free. I don't think about it...and I don't miss it. I am super proud that I was able to kick that addiction. :) So just get through the first few days and you will be good!

I quit cold turkey. It really wasn't an issue. I haven't had one in 6 months. No cravings, no regrets. Before I drank them constantly.

I'm 3 months out. I had surgery 12/3 and stopped drinking diet dr pepper in nov. I still miss it but no longer crave it. I drink crystal light or Water. I don't make bad food decisions anymore either because I'm worry that they'll make me sick plus I spent so much on this surgery that I don't want it to be wasted. You'll do great. Join my fitness pal it really helps!

Ugh.....I'm SO glad someone mentioned this! I will be sleeved on March 29th, and to hear that I should not have diet soda or wine for a YEAR is the scariest part of the whole process! I felt crazy for thinking that, but it's what I've been feeling inside. So glad I'm not alone.

Hi Christen,

How'd you do with giving up diet Coke?

I was literally addicted to the non-diet version. I would wake up and have it for Breakfast and would not stop drinking until I went to bed (hello, insomnia). I set a date for me to quit: the day I got my surgery date. I got my date last week and gave it up right then and there. The first couple of days were hell -- the withdrawal symptoms were crazy: constant headache, irritability, I'd be sleepy all day, got a fever the first night - crazy I tell you. By the third day everything was back to normal, my energy levels were the same as before and I had replaced the Coke with Crystal Light, so I didn't miss sipping on something sweet all the time. Yesterday, about a week after giving it up, I had a craving, but kept having Crystal Light instead. I miss the taste, i miss the fizz, but I can honestly say I'm ready to live my life without it. Two days of caffeine withdrawal is nothing compared to what we already have to go through.

I have not given it up yet. My plan is to do the same as you. I'm waiting until I get my date. I go see my surgeon on Wednesday. I hope I can do it! I have been addicted for years. Congrats on your success. :)

Oh, you'll be able to do it. I, too, was addicted for years, but if you just replace the diet coke with some other non-carbonated drink you'll be fine. I think that more than anything, the act of drinking something other than Water all day is what keeps us addicted - the caffeine helps too. Maybe if you drink juices or any other flavored, non-carbonated liquids (i.e. Crystal Light) and maybe a cup of coffee now and then, it could help, but eventually you're gonna have to give up caffeine altogether anyway, so maybe it's easier to just stop drinking caffeine and endure two days of physical discomfort. My withdrawal didn't include cravings for Coke itself, I just felt ill, especially in the afternoon. You can take care of the headaches with Advil or Tylenol or whatever you use for headaches. The fatigue and irritability, you'll just have to wait it out or drink a little bit of coffee. You'll do great!!

Good luck on Wednesday!!!

Try Propel Zero Water. I love it and it has 0 everything. I was sleeved on 2/19/13 and I gave up soda on 2/18/19. So I'm over a month out without a Diet Coke. You can do it.

Hi' date=' I am meeting my surgeon this week. I'm ready for this but I am so anxious about not being able to drink diet coke. Isn't that crazy? I drink it all day everyday. I know it is terrible for me yet I still do it. Just as I keep making bad food choices. I'm scared that I will go through some sort of withdraw from it. If anyone else has this problem and overcame it please share with me![/quote']

I had a big diet coke addiction as well. Large from McDonald's was the best! I haven't had one in a year. I still miss it. But. Just know I can't have it. And drink Water or crystal light. If I can do it. You can do it. Good luck!

I drank diet mt. dew all day, every day. It's the only thing I drank, for at least 10 years. Not only did I want the caffeine, but I seriously felt that the carbonation was the only thing that quenched my thirst.

Well, I am now on day four of no soda/caffeine. It's not been awful. I have been drinking a ton of Water. Some very slightly sweetened Decaf tea/chai. Yesterday, I had one swallow of diet mt dew from my friend's cup - and although it was nice, it also tasted way too sweet. I have also been taking Tylenol proactively, to avoid the headaches, which has mostly worked.

I will most likely not drink soda again. I like it so much, I am afraid it will easily become an addiction again. I am not very good at moderation - I am pretty all or nothing.

Hi everyone,

I was a big soda drinker. I could care less about the taste of diet coke, but in some sense I must have if I would never drink other diet drinks. I was more of a coke drinker though. My dr and nut say that I can have soda again at 6 months so long as I shook or stirred the carbonation out of it, but to be warned I may not ever really want it. Now, when I take a step back to process this statement I think that both my Dr and Nut may be right when they said that. I have had flat soda before and I hated it.

Good bye Soda's!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
