Hi, I am meeting my surgeon this week. I'm ready for this but I am so anxious about not being able to drink diet coke. Isn't that crazy? I drink it all day everyday. I know it is terrible for me yet I still do it. Just as I keep making bad food choices. I'm scared that I will go through some sort of withdraw from it. If anyone else has this problem and overcame it please share with me!

I was a diet Pepsi drinker and haven't had any problem giving it up. Maybe taking a look at the bigger picture of being healthier might help. Sometimes giving up something is not as bad as you think it will be.

I feared that as well. My vice was diet dr pepper multiple times a day. It was easy to give up after surgery when you are trying so desperately to just get down your fluids for the day... Diet coke will be the last thing on your mind... Or at least that's how it was for me

Then after about 4 months I tried a sip of my beloved diet dr pepper and eh I could do without... It just wasn't the same.

You'll be ok :)

Hello......I can totally relate to what you just wrote. I went to my first meeting in April 2012 and saw my surgeon as well in April 2012. The first thing he told me was to give up my Diet Sunkist that I also drank every day, at least 4 a day. I NEVER thought I'd be able to do it. But, I went to the grocery store and found what I thought was a good alternative, which was orange flavored Mio. I added it to my bottled Water or tap Water. Now, almost a year later since my first meeting and appt, I've not missed it at all. I never thought I'd get thru a day or two much less a year. My advice to you is to try different things, Mio, or Crystal Light packets, anything that can replace the diet soda addiction. Trust me, I know it's hard to do, but the rewards are so awesome, I know you will find what works for you, best of luck!!

Christen, I was right where you are a few weeks ago. I drank diet coke from the moment I woke up until dinner, when I switched to wine. But, I knew I needed to give it up for this surgery to work. Plus every time I turned on my computer I was reading another article about why diet sodas are making us fat. Anyway, I found another, healthier drink that I could tolerate (unsweetened iced tea) and picked a day to quit- cold turkey. I can tell you that the first day was awful, I had a huge headache. But I was surprised that by the second day the headache was gone. It's been about 2 weeks, and I'm feeling good. I haven't had my surgery yet, so I may still try to give up the caffeinated tea to help with weight loss, but at least I've sworn off the bubbly stuff.

You can do it!!

If you are going to do this surgery then don't let diet coke ruin your dreams of being thin and healthy. Don't give it that much power!

I'm not going to let it stop me. I'm just worried about the withdrawal. I think I will miss the diet coke more than I will the food. The thought induces real anxiety. I'm glad I am not alone. I'm going to buy a big insulated cup today and some flavoring for Water. I do enjoy sweet tea. I am southern so it is always available. Ahhh! The emotions I am going through are all over the place!

Just another person that was addicted to Diet Coke, I slowly reduced the amount I was drinking and was totally off of it a month before surgery. There are times I miss it but for the most part it hasn't been a big deal. I never would have believed it but you will find it easier than you think.

I was a diet coke addict as well. I havent had one since July, before i started my pre op diet.

I am 6 1/2 months out now and I know some people have tried soda again but i wont even try a sip because 1) i am afraid it will go down fine and i will start drinking it again or 2) the carbonation will not go down fine and i will get sick.

I still miss the idea of diet coke. It kind of became my new bff when i quit smoking 3 years ago.

I was not looking forward to giving it up, but i knew i had to. Lean on us, thats what we are here for. There are a lot of ex diet coke addicts here. Coincidence? lol!! No!

I was never addicted to diet coke but was addicted to drugs and smoking earlier in my life. All I can tell you is to identify it as your enemy and face it down. I got help from God. We won.

I can relate to Less' post. I came completely off all drinks that have calories or carbonation till 6 weeks after surgery when I bought a diet Dr Pepper. One drank about 1/2 the bottle and was so repulsed, I had to throw the rest away.

Per surgery I was the guy that would go to dinner & have 5-6 glasses of Dr. Pepper with my meal. Go figure.

I do have a few lightly carbonated flavored sparkling waters now, but sodas simply do not attract me any longer.

Obviously there was nothing about diet in my diet coke drinking. I did lose weight when I switched from the real thing but it piled back on. My appointment is March 27th. I am hoping to kick the habit in the next couple weeks.

I drank alot of diet coke before surgery. I slowly weaned myself off of it on my pre-op diet. I was sleeved on 2/19 and haven't had one since. I don't necessarily miss it but sometimes I see people drinking one and wish I could but then I remember why I stopped and I get over that feeling. I don't even know info went through withdrawal bc I was dealing with surgery pain so I didn't notice it. The meds helped with that I'm sure. LOL!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
