aaayoungs 13 Posted March 4, 2013 It sounds like most people have their gallbladder removed after surgery. What ate Yall thoughtd on removing it during surgery?
chrwalen 2 Posted March 4, 2013 I just had mine out due to losing weight before surgery. I've lost 51 pounds in 2 months. I just went low carbs and low fats with lots of exercise. I'm now seeing though that most people are having it out afterwards. Not sure why or if they are related.
Thenewmrssmith 36 Posted March 4, 2013 Part of my pre op requires a sono of my gall bladder. If my surgeon sees any stones or any issues he will be removing it during surgery.
kristikay 60 Posted March 4, 2013 I am taking Ursodiol, a prescription to help me not develop any problems with my gallbladder following surgery. So far so good. I am not sure a doctor would take out a healthy gallbladder before you are having any problems.
Losin4good 690 Posted March 4, 2013 My gallbladder had no issues pre op. i had to have mine removed at 3 months post op because it was full of gallstones and I was having a lot of pain. Perfect ever since! Now it seems like everyone i know who had surgery around the sane time i did is having theirs removed. Mine just went kaput first
Losin4good 690 Posted March 4, 2013 To answer your question.....if my surgeon gave me the option and i could go back in time, i would definitely have my gallbladder removed during vsg. The pain I went through from gallstones and a gallbladder attack was ridiculous. And having to have gallbladder surgery 12 weeks post op from vsg really freaked me out. Jen.D 10 Posted March 4, 2013 I am taking Ursodiol, a prescription to help me not develop any problems with my gallbladder following surgery. So far so good. I am not sure a doctor would take out a healthy gallbladder before you are having any problems. I'm glad to hear that there is something they can give you to "try" to prevent gallbladder problems. This is one thing that I am worried about. Niki, did your surgeon give you anything to help protect your gallbladder?
aaayoungs 13 Posted March 4, 2013 @KRISTIK I wonder if a doctor would just prescribe them just precaution.
kristikay 60 Posted March 4, 2013 @KRISTIK I wonder if a doctor would just prescribe them just precaution. [/quote Thats what my doctor did, it is part of the protocol following surgery if you still have your gallbladder.
JennyBeth 127 Posted March 4, 2013 My surgeon does the same thing. You have an ultrasound to make sure your gallbladder looks good then you take medication for 6 months to prevent gall stones. My surgeon said they don't remove a healthy gallbladder because it could be an unnecessary surgery and many don't need their's removed.
aaayoungs 13 Posted March 4, 2013 Wow! This good information! Thanks!
Threetimesacharm 1,400 Posted March 4, 2013 The gallbladder is an organ that you can live without and for many will develop gallstones because of dieting. I would definitely get it out at the same time, save you another surgery going forward.
Malexa03 18 Posted March 4, 2013 Mine said only 20% of people have a problem with theirs after surgery so they don't remove until necessary. He also doesn't prescribe preventive medicine for it either.
Rena's got this 274 Posted April 1, 2013 My surgeon suggested that I have it tested, and he was leaning towards removal. My mom and sister both had theirs out due to gallstones, and both of them were not overweight when it happened. I'm pretty sure I have a good chance of developing gallstones with such a family history.

And I have to say I'm glad after I heard how many gallbladders go bad afterwards!
