Recommended Posts

It sounds like most people have their gallbladder removed after surgery. What ate Yall thoughtd on removing it during surgery?

I just had mine out due to losing weight before surgery. I've lost 51 pounds in 2 months. I just went low carbs and low fats with lots of exercise. I'm now seeing though that most people are having it out afterwards. Not sure why or if they are related.

Part of my pre op requires a sono of my gall bladder. If my surgeon sees any stones or any issues he will be removing it during surgery.

I am taking Ursodiol, a prescription to help me not develop any problems with my gallbladder following surgery. So far so good. I am not sure a doctor would take out a healthy gallbladder before you are having any problems.

My gallbladder had no issues pre op. i had to have mine removed at 3 months post op because it was full of gallstones and I was having a lot of pain. Perfect ever since!

Now it seems like everyone i know who had surgery around the sane time i did is having theirs removed. Mine just went kaput first ;)

To answer your question.....if my surgeon gave me the option and i could go back in time, i would definitely have my gallbladder removed during vsg.

The pain I went through from gallstones and a gallbladder attack was ridiculous. And having to have gallbladder surgery 12 weeks post op from vsg really freaked me out.

I'm glad to hear that there is something they can give you to "try" to prevent gallbladder problems. This is one thing that I am worried about.

Niki, did your surgeon give you anything to help protect your gallbladder?

@KRISTIK I wonder if a doctor would just prescribe them just precaution.

Thats what my doctor did, it is part of the protocol following surgery if you still have your gallbladder.

My surgeon does the same thing. You have an ultrasound to make sure your gallbladder looks good then you take medication for 6 months to prevent gall stones. My surgeon said they don't remove a healthy gallbladder because it could be an unnecessary surgery and many don't need their's removed.

The gallbladder is an organ that you can live without and for many will develop gallstones because of dieting. I would definitely get it out at the same time, save you another surgery going forward.

Mine said only 20% of people have a problem with theirs after surgery so they don't remove until necessary. He also doesn't prescribe preventive medicine for it either.

My surgeon suggested that I have it tested, and he was leaning towards removal. My mom and sister both had theirs out due to gallstones, and both of them were not overweight when it happened. I'm pretty sure I have a good chance of developing gallstones with such a family history.

I take these too! My doc gives them to all of his patients.. And I have to say I'm glad after I heard how many gallbladders go bad afterwards!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
