HAVING MY SURGERY ON MARCH 19TH. I JUST HAD A QUESTION ...WHY DO PEOPLE GET DEHYDRATED AFTER SURGERY CAN THEY NOT DRINK FLUIDS? AREN'T THEY THIRSTY?

Recommended Posts

You can drink but you will have no desire too, which I didn't. It hurts because if you drink too fast it will give you pains. It takes a little bit to want to drink. At first it was such a chore to me because I could only sip. Drinking is a challenge for the first week or two. You have to re-teach yourself how to do it.

I would say it is likely because they struggle to get their fluids in. After surgery there are several things you have to deal with. 1. Nausea. 2. Fear 3. Restriction.

I personally was scared to drink anything because of the nausea. So I had a hard time the first couple of days!

I am 3 weeks post-op and experienced dehydration for the first time in my life. With my new smaller stomach drinking more than 2 or 3 ounces of Water at time makes me so full that I can't drink anymore. Drinking water was never an effort before but now I have to really make an effort. It is possible, just need to be conscious of it.

For most, there are several compounding factors right after surgery. Everyone is swollen and it can hurt to swallow. Also, that swelling can also mean it is hard to have liquid in your new tummy. Some experience nausea from the drugs as well as from anything they drink. For example, before I was sleeved, I never gave a thought to how much I drank or when. I drank when thirsty. Right after being sleeved, I experienced thirst but couldn't drink more than one ounce at a time. Hardly enough to quench thirst or stay hydrated. Now I can drink more that an ounce at a time, however to stay hydrated and assist with weight loss, I have to drink 64 oz a day. I have to schedule and track my Water otherwise, I fall behind as I cannot chug a bottle of water like before surgery. Plus I'm supposed to eat 5 or 6 times a day but I'm not supposed to drink 30 min before eating or a hour after. You have to keep up with hydration and if you get busy, forget to drink, catching up can be really diffucult.

There's a lot of swelling after surgery. So you feel full. I had to really focus to get in enough Fluid. At home I used a kitchen timer. I set every 15 min. Your goal should be 1 oz every 15 min. in the beginning it's not easy. My surgeon said count all liquid going in. Even Protein Shakes counted. The goal is 64 oz of fluids daily. Trust me without that amount your plumbing won't work very well. Hope this helps.Best Wishes

Regarding water/fluid drinking-I am and have been a gulper. To be sleeved in a week. My "weight coach" recommended buying a "sippy" cup. I purchased 2 10oz ones. I've been practicing--it does slow you down.

Your tummy is swollen and it is NOT comfortable to intake anything. I had a tough time and was almost rehospitalized due to dehydration. I had to force Fluid in by mixing apple juice and Water and had to time myself drinking all day! Yuck. At first it took me about 10 minutes to get 1oz in but I improved it to 5 minutes. It was tough but it gets better and still happy with my surgery and the results!

I was back at work 2 and a half weeks after surgery. Wish I had taken a full three weeks. Exhausted and so weak still. Everything worked out OK. My boss cut me some slack and didn't say too much about me having to sit down and rest every ten minutes. :)

It really depends on your type of work. everyone is different. most people it takes a few weeks at least to fill full strength. most people with desk job return in a few weeks. best wishes.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
