Protein requirements...am I getting enough?

Recommended Posts

I'm a little over a month post-sleeve. I'm on the soft diet (can eat pretty much anything cooked and that I can cut with a fork). But I wonder if I'm getting enough Protein. I have a shake for Breakfast (25g protein) and eat small meals for lunch and dinner of usually chicken or fish and veggies. I feel great and haven't had any issues with food really besides some indigestion and discomfort (probably from eating too fast). How do I know if I'm getting enough protein? What happens if I'm not? HELP!

You need to keep track of what you eat and add up the number of grams of Protein in everything you eat. You shouldn't take in less than 60 grams per day and as you go along, you will need more than that. Do you use myfitnesspal?

I find that I have to track my intake using myfitnesspal in order to be sure that I get enough Protein in. I believe in the future it will get to the point where it won't be necessary but not for a while. I agree that 60 grams a day minimum is a good start. Not getting enough protein leads to your body eating at your muscle to replenish the protein. In a more noticeable manner it makes you tired and weak.

Thanks for the help..I don't use myfitnesspal but I guess I should. I usually write everything down but if I don't finish a meal I can't really estimate how much I actually got.

Thanks! I had no idea that would happen if I don't get enough...I'll definitely look into myfitnesspal now.

If you regularly fail to finish a meal, weigh it before you eat and weigh what is left when you are finished. Invest in a food scale so you can get accurate weights. Very few people can eyeball their amounts in the beginning. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
