Slim Fast, not a healthy choice?

Recommended Posts

So, i bought a bunch of slimfast for my pre-op days and I was drinking one of those discusting things, and they are very unhealthy! Full of fructose corn Syrup, hydrogenated oils, saturated fat, lots of carbs, and sugar! It's like a low calorie milk shake. not healthy at all! Aren't we supposed to be staying away from all that bad stuff in general, at a normal weight or not?

There are many different types of slim fast. I think the regular one is really good and tastes like a milkshake. Like you said, it has way too much sugar. The low carb is a little more watered down, but it only has like 2-3 carbs and sugars which isn't bad. They also used to have a low sugar version, but I don't know if they do anymore. There is also a high Protein One.< /p>

The first Protein I tried right after post-op was something like Isopure ZeroCarb or Perfect Carb, about $70 at the local GNC. I was mixing it with Water and it was nasty. It got to where I couldn't even stand the smell. So I mixed it with low carb, FF milk and it became tolerable. After lots of other Protein mixes I've settled on Six Star advanced whey protein. No aftertaste (to me), good protein counts, low on carbs. I usually mix it with Carb Countdown 2% milk + some things for flavor, or I'll mix the vanilla with low cal OJ and a packet of splenda.

Never tried Slim Fast. A co-worker drank those for a while and had the WORST gas. And I don't just mean in terms of frequency, if you know what I mean.

My surgeon chooses the medifast shakes. I buy the chocolate ones and they taste quite good... 90 - 100 calories. He specifically advises NOT to use any of the Slimfast shakes.< /span>

Thanks for the info, my husband drinks the Nutrilite XS brand of Protein shakes and I bought slim fast thinking it was comparable since he is all out of the XS brand ones and I need them now, and you can only buy them online and being in Germany it takes a few weeks to get them, so I compared the two and saw that slimfast is so bad for you, XS has 11 oz in a can Slimfast 11 oz

XS-220 cal. Slimfast 190

XS 6g fat slimfast 6g

Xs .5g sat.fat slimfast 2.5

XS 5carbs slimfast 24g

XS 35g Protein Slimfast 10g

XS Water, protein, Calcium, safflower oil, potassium, no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

Slimfast ff milk, Water, sugar, canola oil, fructose, hydrogenated soybean oil, (just to name a few)

what a difference! Right? I guess the cheaper way is not the best way. XS is $2 a can and Slimfast is about $1.

Guess slimfast is going in the garbage!

I do make fruit smoothies with Protein Powder and I prefer that over any of the Protein Shakes. Great suggestion. I just like to have a shake on hand for on the go times, you know?

Just thought I would share, since I see a lot of posts about people picking up a slimfast.

I don't recommend Slim Fast in any version to anyone. I was a Slim Fast user and ended up in the hospital getting my gallbladder out as an emergency surgery. Per my surgeon and doctor they both agreed that Slim Fast is not nutritious and it contains so much sodium and other "junk" that using it on a regular basis can cause problems such as sludge in the gallbladder. Plus, I never thought it helped me lose weight anyway! Regular old Protein Shakes are probably the better option.

I also use Six Star when I mix my own. For pre-mix I use Atkins. They are ok. Probably not the healthiest option - but they are easy for me and low carb/high Protein.

My doc also advises against slim fast - for all the reasons mentioned.

Good luck!

You need to check out Matrix chocolate (Protein powder). You can get it online. Ebay (or a few other web sites) It comes in a purple 5 lb. bag.

It is the best tasting product out there. You just have to be sure to mix it correctly.

(for hot chocolate)

You use one scoop in the bottom of your cup. Add 1/3 cup of COLD Water

Mix until smooth

THEN add the hot Water

That way it comes out perfect everytime (with no lumps).

Another great way to get Protein is ANY whey Protein. You can it get at GNC (or online). It is a tasteless powder that can go in your Soups, coffee, anything semi solid (mashed potatoes) -- depending on what stage of the diet your at. It adds 17 grams of protein with no change in flavor or texture. You can even add it to Matrix for a huge protein boost.

Saw one of your posts asking about slim fast... and that stuff tastes like crap. Thought I would share this since it acutally tastes like something that can be enjoyed, not just tolerated.

Have a good day!

Yes they are pretty bad. Shoot, for that many calories, I can eat half a piece of pie anyway!

I actually think the chocolate ones taste good but if you make your own Protein smoothies you can get much more volume by adding more ice, etc. That is much more filling. I stay away from Slimfast since it takes me about 30 seconds to drink the whole thing and that's a lot of calories for 30 seconds.

And, when it comes to Protein, they stink. Not much at all. Even the high protein ones. I can get 20-30 g of protein with my Protein Powder and milk.

I have a terrible time when I have to stick with these high Protein liquid dietary supplements. I gag at dairy products, and even tho I KNOW, there is no dairy content, in my mind, they TASTE like they are a milk product. Pre/post op diet was very challenging for me.

The best of the bunch for me was the chocolate flavored Atkins drink.

low carb/high protein. I could get it down if it was very, very cold.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
