Was THAT dumping? (Wine related)

Recommended Posts

I am beating myself up for this one - 6 wks post-op and last night I drank 2 iced-down glasses of wine over about 2 hour period. It was dumb and I was not thinking because at 4 am I awoke with a burning tummy. TMI - but the bathroom was not pretty: sweating, wanting die, other gross things and me laying on the cold bathroom floor... I am thinking it was the sugar in the wine that caused the "dumping"?? I feel like craaaap today.

I haven't had the problem from wine, thank god. But ice cream gives me the symptoms you just described. It is horrible. I can eat weight watcher ice cream though.

I have not had ice cream yet... but sure i will someday - WW sounds like a good idea!

I just thought it was odd how it took several hours before I had symptoms - I remember reading others experiences and it sounds like it happens pretty much right away???

i have had the same experience on 2 different occassions. Both times were later... called "late" dumping. Your sugar most likely spiked after the wine... then dropped really really low because your body produced too much insulin to bring it down. That is how it was explained to me. I started sweating and feeling AWFUL and ended up on the toilet for a while. Not a fun thing. I actually checked my sugar (i have a machine from my last pregnancy) and it was 43 so I drank juice to bring it back up and that helped the second time and it did not last as long. For me... it was after eating a some marshmallows with my little girl. And another time from eating ice cream. :/

Thanks for the responses! I have never heard of "late dumping" - good to know.

I didn't know we could get dumping with the sleeve! I thought it was just too much sugar with bypass patients. Good to know.

I drank a whole bottle of wine yesterday over the course of several hours and right before I was about to go to bed I had loose stools. I'm 5 months post op and was playing video games and this was my first time drinking this much but yup I was off and on the toilet all night and this morning. Alcohol did that to me before surgery but it usually didn't happen until the morning. I learned my lesson and plus I didn't eat while I was drinking and I'm sure that made it worse. I don't consider it dumping though.

I'm thinking it is because f the dehydration alcohol causes more than it being dumping. From my experience dumping is pretty sudden and almost as soon as I ingest the sugar and it hits my tummy.

Late dumping is from the sugars changing drastically and very quickly. But actual dumping is from our bodies not processing the sugars correctly and it DUMPS into our intestines too quickly. Which is where the name dumping comes from.

Thanks for the feedback on this! I figured I was way too dehydrated the next day - especially since I still struggle with getting all the Water in.... I wonder how liquor with a sf mix would sit with me. Not that I am in any hurry whatsoever but wine seems out for now and I know beer is off the table... sigh. all well.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
