If you could go back....what would you do differently? I'm always seeing people talk about this honeymoon period right after surgery and taking advantage of the beginning. So here I am, 5 weeks and 5 days post op, wondering how to make the very best of this time. Share your thoughts :)

I have gained 15 pounds since Christmas so my surgery date is April 8. I have to do the post op diet

now. I am 5 foot 4 and 215 pounds. I have gained forty pounds in one year. The doctor said I should

start my pre-op diet now so my liver will shrink before surgery. You can always do your honeymoon

post op now and then 2 weeks before surgery do the liquid diet that your doctor says to do. I have to

start mine now.

Sincerely,

Tracy

Unfortunately I was not able to exercise right after surgery. I had injured my neck just three days before my planned program was to start. This injury took a total of 17 weeks to get to surgery and recover. I did lose weight and stuck to "Basics" , but I think I could have lost more or hit goal sooner had I been able to work out. I think over all you feel better too. I can tell you once I started, I have lost weight, yet it was slow, but feel so much better and am getting more toned each day.

My advice is to use the "bible" that your doctor gave you and it will work great. All of my information including diet, exercise and recipes were put into a red binder. I call that my bible. Eat often, drink lots of Water and don't drink with your meals. Protein first and at that stage, that's about all I could take in.

I am now 14 months post op and at goal, but worry about maintenance since I can and do eat more. I'm much more hungry now. I think the first 9-10 months my hunger level was much lower. Take advantage of that. Best of luck to you.

Kept up the good work.

I think the first 6 months are the best opportunity to lose as much weight has possible. This is the time to really build those good eating habits and exercise habits. This is a good time to reconcile your relationship with food and make the kind of commitment necessary for overall success. It takes some self analysis and the ability to be completely honest with yourself about how you got to this point and what your ultimate goal is. In a lot of ways the surgery is simply the easiest part. The struggle comes when you have have to make those significant changes that are going to impact you for the rest of your days. Unfortunately many can't seem to connect the dots and ultimately fall back into the old norm, the comfortable warm and fuzzies. That's when the weight starts to creep back up. If you can fully understand your end game and not fall back into the channels that led you to where you are now, you will be successful. I work just as hard on what is going on between the ears as I do with what is going on in my stomach. It's a hard thing at times, so worth it in the end.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
