Cardio or toning what do u do post op?

Recommended Posts

I advise to do a mixture of both. If all you do is cardio you will end up just being a smaller version of your previous shape... Think tennis ball to a golf ball. If you want to transform the shape of your body you need to mix some resistance training with your cardio.

I was told to do a lot of Cardio Post operative to burn up a lot of calories

and to flush toxins out of the liver. You can do 30 minutes of cardio and 10 minutes

of toning the muscles and stretches to help.

Ease slowly into a combination of cardio and strength training. You need to build muscles, they are 24/7 calorie burners.

I do High Intensity Interval Training, (HIIT), calesthetics - (push ups, knee bends with weights), bodyblade, kettlebell, and stretchy bands. I like to change up a lot, do different combinations, never let my body adjust.

I consider myself to be in life long athletic training. I will quit when my heart stops beating for at least 10 minutes. -_-

My workouts seldom go beyond 40 minutes and occur generally 3 times a week.

Whatever exercise you do it is good. I would say at least 30 minutes a day will really help out.

All I did was treadmill walking post-op for a year. I went from 268 to 198 in six months. Then it took me another six months to drop the next 20lbs and as those six months went on, I did less and less cardio. (bad girl!) about 1.5 months ago I got my fanny back on the treadmill and about a month ago I started a running training program. I've dropped another 5lbs. I started the running to hopefully help tone up and tighten up some skin. I'm sure some light weight lifting would help too, I just don't have time.

A mix of both is best. Muscle building allows your body to burn more calories and it helps with skin elasticity (drink lots of Water too). If you are within 15 days post op do what your doc says. My doctors rule of thumb is less than 15 lbs for 15 days. So in addition to cardio I will be doing exercises with lower weights, higher reps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
