Kaiser and denial ?!?!

Recommended Posts

My best friend is doing her Options classes through Kaiser in So Cal. Requirements are to lose 21 pounds. She has lost 6 pounds and has a about a month left for her last weigh in. Has anyone gone through this process? We are scared that they will deny her if all the weight has not been lost!!! Advice needed, help please ;)

I completed my options classes for Kaiser So Cal in Jan. I only lost about 5% of the 10% they ask you to lose. It didn't seem to be a factor. I think they just want to make sure that you are using the classes to lose weight and holding yourself accountable by doing the food logs and not just ignoring the information. I've only heard of them denying one of the girls but she gained about 20 lbs during the course of the class. Usually, if you make it to the options class you are pretty much approved. So your friend shouldn't stress too much :)

Thanks for your help I'm the friend that Sarah is talking about. I have my 9th option class tomorrow and hopefully I lost more weight. If you don't mind me asking who was your surgeon and where did you take your options class? Thanks for your help and if you have any tips for me they would be greatly appreciated.

I was told by my doctor at kaiser that if I didn't meet my weight goal that surgery would be cancelled. I am sure every doctor is different but that's what mine said.

Do you have any comorbodities? I definitely don't think it would be too much of a problem if you did. I was sleeved through kaiser SoCal as well, although I didnt have to go through the options program my surgeon did ask me to lose weight the month prior to my surgery and I was only able to lose 7 and he was happy with it. I think you'll be okay.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
