It has been a while since I last flew on a plane. The last time, I weighed probably 50 pounds less and was able to stuff myself into the seat, but it was definitely uncomfortable. My hips are now 59" and the average coach seat is only 17" wide. Have any of you similarly-sized people flown recently? It would be especially helpful to hear from people who flew soon after surgery. What was it like for you? Do aisle seats help? Anything else? Thank you!

I have not had surgery, but I did fly in January and we have similar measurements. I flew Delta, same size seats, a total of 5 flights. What I found was I was far more comfortable by the window because I could lean into the window area and didn't have to worry about people walking down the middle. I was able to put the arm rests down, but didn't, I was also sitting next to a close friend so we "cuddled" I was Impressed by the flight attendants, I never felt uncomfortable asking for seat belt extenders and they always handed them to me in a way that didn't draw attention. I had 3 short flights and 2 long (6hrs each) and made sure once I was settled I would only have to get out once, in the middle to pee. I never put my tray down, utilized my friends. I did do the aisle Once and hated it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
