Recommended Posts

about 6 weeks post op. down almost 60lbs. got sleeved on 01-29-13. i do great all day. drink Water and my Protein Shake, have my yogurt and soft cheeses, sometimes tuna. but when it comes to dinner time and the night time i always seem to struggle especially when i'm home. i def graze when i am home. and i hate it. a little Peanut Butter, a little more cheese, S.F. pops etc. sometimes if i eat chicken and f.f. gravy ill eat till im full and then go back later. it's so hard to learn this new way of life but i know i have to. i scraped the cheese of the pizza i made from scratch for my family the other night.

is this normal ?? should i feel hungry and still crave food? i know my brain can play tricks on me but when will it stop. i don't want to want pizza or chinese or fast food bc i know it's poison. it's what go me here in the first place. i think i should eat and once im full just leave and walk away or go work out. do you still want food this far out ???

Honestly I don't see what is wrong with wanting pizza or Chinese food. I still do! Does it mean I will ever sit down and eat 4 slices of pizza again? No. will I stuff myself with fried rice and sweet n sour chicken drowned in sauce? No. Will I eat homemade pizza in 3-4 oz servings, yes indeed!! Will I eat Chinese veggies or beef or chicken with broccoli, yes! I did not have the surgery to stop living, I had it to enjoy the living I do!!

But the key you've identified is craving versus hunger. Two totally different things. Unfortunately the surgery only deals with one of them. It's still a matter of self control to stop the grazing and giving into cravings and head hunger. The only good thing is that you're full faster.

Probably need to find some evening behavior changes. Finding other things that can get you out of the kitchen in the evening.

Definitely sounds like head hunger. Also, you don't lose your Ghrelin, it gets reduced. The stats say 50% lose their hunger 50% don't. I'd start with a psych and nutritionist and keep them close for a while! Good luck!

I am 4 weeks postop and I have always been hungry since day 1. It is a struggle for me . My surgeon said my ppi is working but some people do still get hungry after surgery. So what I have to do is to put myself on a schedule and I eat more little meals through the day. It seem to be working so far but I noticed that since I went back to work Monday, I can't eat and drink as often, so I'm not reaching my liquid quota and I have to starve a little until I am able to eat. Ughhhhh

Try eating 5 or 6 small meals a day like every 3 hours. Make sure you eat all your Protein first and then veggies. If you eay more protein it should keep you fuller longer. As for cravings use spices to make your meals taste like what you crave. Hope this helps and goodluck

60 pounds in 6 weeks? that's 10 pounds in a week! Honestly, if I were you, I would just keep doing what you are doing, and if your weight loss slows down, then figure out what changes you need to make.

I am always hungry too. It stinks. Working on small amounts every 2-3 hours. I can resist now before surgery that was impossible. Its a journey we are on. Of course food still looks and smells good. Food didnt change, we did. I am also surrounded by foodies, uggg

I have been hungry since day one also. I do fine all day till I get home from work then the grazing begins! My weight loss has been slow due to this behavior...from your weight loss looks like you are doing well......alot better then I am!

I've only been head hungry when I see things I really enjoyed. But I've been able to turn the switch off and go in another direction of thought.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
