Is anyone else suffering from "my mind is playing tricks on me" situation. I'm five days post op and I've been thinking about fast food and junk food!!!! It's the hardest thing to try to control! haven't tried to eat anything I wouldn't want to harm myself but these shakes just aren't enough! Any suggestions?!

What phase of the diet are you on? Best thing to do is keep yourself busy. It's tough but you CAN overcome this.

You just have to put mind over matter. Its your brain rebelling. I wanted MCD french fries a week after surgery and I hardly ever went there before surgery. Just try to get busy and take you mind off of it and you will be fine. When you see that number going down on the scale your craving will get less. have lost close to 30 pounds in almost 5 weeks. You will over come this.

That junk is addictive, that's why you want it so badly!

It's no help now, but in a few months, odds are good most of that will turn your stomach.

You've got to give the liquid diet post op diet a real shot as hard as it is. You need it so you can heal properly and avoid unnecessary complications.

This is one of the hardest parts of the process from a physical point. And it's definitely normal to feel "hungry" while on liquids.

Hang in there. Try your hardest to overcome this and take heart that in a few short weeks you'll be frustrated that you can only eat a few bites at a time.

My first week after surgery I was ready to choke someone for a mozzarella stick from Arby's. Don't worry -- the craving passes after a little while. :)

You will want it, only because you are so used to having it. Once you get to the point to where you can actually eat it again, it will make you feel horrible and so gross because your body will have adjusted from it. If I'm out and need to grab something quick because I didn't plan accordingly, or if we end up going to a fast food place I usually try to do Wendy's. I will get a small chili, which is a couple meals in it's self, or I'll order the grilled snack wrap and cut up the chicken and take it all out of the tortilla and it makes a little mini salad with lettuce, cheese and chicken (with or with out the sauce, I usually get no sauce).

When, or if, you are in the solid food stage of your diet you will be able to eat most things, as long as they agree with you and in small amounts. This is where it is very important to pay attention to what you are eating. My husband and I constantly ate at fast food restaurants post surgery and we often frequent fast foods now. The difference is I will get a grilled chicken filet, no bun, no sides, and no drink (There's no point in getting something to drink when I won't be able to drink it for 30 minutes) or a small salad with light dressing and I usually only eat the meat and a bite of the lettuce, barely dipping it in the dressing.

It isn't good to rely primarily on fast food, but there are things you can do to get the "fast food feeling" but not the fast food calories and carbs. I find that because my options are so limited when going to fast food places that I don't have the desire to do it as often. I'd rather eat at home, where I have more options.

Great points, Nerdy. It's important to understand that avoiding those foods when possible is always healthier, but in the real world we often have to make compromises like this. It's fully possible to incorporate these things wisely. You just have to be diligent and use moderation.

As a side note, I save so much money now...I just order a sandwich and it's two meals for me. I don't need a drink, don't want any sides and that old craving for fast food fries is long gone.

Great points! I like the fact that you have more options at home Nerdy! Everyone's advice helped curve that fast food hunger. Does anyone have any suggestions on which Full liquid foods? Which ones are better tasting to help that crazy craving !?

I still go through that, 7 weeks out, dreaming of a Jimmy Johns sandwich or a Little Ceasar's pizza. My first weeks after surgery, I watched the Food Network Channel, no lie! But, my stomach could not "stomach" it, so it was easy to get over it.

When you are able to start to clean out your closet, because you are dropping in sizes, that is when you realize that that few minutes of cravings is not worth it. It does get better.

When you say that you order a sandwich, are you able to eat the bread? I am worried about bread, crackers, Pasta, rice, as I was told they "expand" in your stomach.

I discovered Jimmy Johns AFTER my surgery, lol. I went and got the turkey unwhich and it ended up being 3-4 meals worth!

I find that going to places for sandwiches Subway, other than to get a salad is pointless for me. I can eat bread (barely) but I really don't like to. It makes me feel full too fast and bloated and then you get hungry too soon after. If I do get bread for something, I make sure to get the Flatouts and I'll have 1/2 of one.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
