Mid chest pain when eating

Recommended Posts

I am 9 days post op and eating thick liquids, yogurt, Soup, pudding, sweet potatoes. The last two days I get a pain mid chest when eating, is this heartburn or acid? Anyone experienced this? The pain definitely starts mid chest/breast bone area

Did you have a hiatal hernia repair? I did and that can add to the discomfort until the swelling there settles down.

This may be a sign you are eating too large of bites, eating too quickly or not chewing enough. Try smaller bites less often. Make sure your sweet potatoes are really mushy or chewed well. Only have a couple bites and stop. Your body is not going to be able to tell you when you are full, so you are just going to have to stop after about 2 bites at this stage.

i agree - you're probably taking bigger bites than necessary. i'm 9 days post op as well, and i get the same pain if i don't chew well or take too big a bite. i had a brain fart today and ate too much lunch too fast today and boy did i pay for it!!!

I agree with sleeve master,i'm suprise you call eat all of that i was on liquids for two weeks, and the second phase, and than the third phase which is the pureed food, and than you go to soft foods, well every Dr. is different, but i can say eating to fast will do that, and your Soups make sure you are straining them..

I am pretty sure the pain was due to being too thick. I thought if it was soft and mushy that was enough. Water down is now my middle name! Thanks for all your replies

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
