Pre-Op Diet and a required Brunch meeting

Recommended Posts

I had a question that answers are purely of opinion, but I just wanted to know what others might do in my situation.

I know some people do not have a pre-op diet required by their surgeons. My doctor does requires it and I started on Wednesday of this week. I'm managing OK two full days in, but I have a brunch meeting tomorrow that I cannot miss.

Would you eat the most sensible item on the menu (high proten, low fat) or do your best to not eat at all?

On my diet I am limited to 1,000 calories a day with at least 50g of Protein and no more than 35g of fat. I can have shakes, up to 2 cups of non-starchy veggies and 2 tbsp of non-fat Salad Dressing. I have been having 4-5 shakes (approx 200 cals) a day with plain non-starchy veggies throughout the day.

So, let's face it... I'm not going to be able to sit there while everyone else is eating real food, while I pretend I am full from a shake and that I don't want anything. I'm thinking I could do a shake before I go and maybe do egg whites maybe some grilled veggies and a side salad with no dressing.

If I had a choice I just wouldn't go, but I need to be there.

Lend me your thoughts, ideas and strategies. Thanks in advance!

Perhaps a salad with some chicken or other lean meat would be a good compromise? If I couldn't avoid eating pre-op, that's probably what I would have done. I don't know if these people are aware of your situation or not, so if they were, not eating wouldn't be a huge shock.

the salad with lean Protein is the best idea I think. maybe do a chefs salad with mixed greens (baby spinach included) chicken breast, a hard boiled egg, and low fat cheese if you can. all that protein will fill you up. also drink a huge glass of Water before you go as well as a shake. maybe it will help. if you eat very very slowly you may just fill up and actually be full. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
