So I had my psych eval today and I have no clue how it really went. She asked me a bunch of questions related to why I wanted the surgery, my family life, any trauma in the past. She said that it sounds like I am working really hard to follow what my doctors have been asking me to do, but she didnt give me any info beyond that. She also stated that she wanted to talk with my primary therapist before she sends in her report. My therapist is totally on board with my decision to get WLS, but this is just another wait in the long line of waits that I have to go through. She said that she should have the report done by my next NUT appointment, and I really hope that she does as this would delay getting my appointment with the surgeon. I just hope this wont hold me back at all....I am so close to get pushed back!!

How have other people's psych evals gone? What was your experience like?

I actually have two psych appointments...I had one earlier this month, where the therapist just talked to me and asked questions....things like that. I go back tomorrow to take either an MMPI or Millon test. And then he sends his report to my bariatric doctor. However, he did tell me that he does not say that someone should or should not have the surgery....he said that's a decision for the individual to make, not him. He just wants to make sure that they understand this is a lifestyle change and things are going to be very different than what they are now.

I've yet to hear of anyone failing the psych evaluation.

People with horrible support systems and severe food addictions "pass" the eval all the time.

I have a feeling you'll be just fine - and post-op, all these hoops will be worth it!!!

Yeah I have a pretty good support system and would not really consider myself to have a severe food addiction...Ive been able to stick with my pre op nutritional diet for the most part and have lost 10 lbs so far.

My psych eval was a joke. I filled out one page which was about my feelings for the past month. The other two pages were about anxiety. Once I was done he looked at everything and asked me no questions. He then said he recommends me for bariatric surgery and that everything would be sent to the surgeon the next morning. That was it! I was looking forward to pouring my heart out to someone!!!! As I was walking out the door he said your going to look great after surgery! Gee thanks!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
