Dizzy, lightheaded, no energy, weak

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 weeks and 2 days out since surgery. Every day these symptoms are getting worse. I saw my surgeon yesterday and he said it was normal. I'm getting enough Protein and fluids. He says patients who suffer from severe depression (I.e. me) tend to feel this way for about a month post op.

I guess what I'm asking is; how did you combat this?

I'm not functional at all. I go to clean, and I have to sit or lie in bed after three minutes. I don't trust myself out and about to do errands.

It will get better. Depression will stay with you no matter what until you get the right medicine and right counseling. The stage you are at right now is the hardest of all. Time will heal you and make you feel a lot better. Are you seeing counseling or have you been prescribed medicine? We are here for you. When you feel down you can pm me and I will listen, anytime you need a shoulder or a friend.

Having surgery can be very overwhelming and cause an upheval of emotions. It did for me as well and I don't suffer from depression. But I often felt sad and not myself even though I was losing weight and becoming healthier which is what I wanted. At first I didn't understand these feelings but it did slowly get better. Also I am 6 weeks out and I get light headed and dizzy sometimes. I've had to have an EGD (NOT THE NORM) to help dilate some narrow areas in my esophagus and sleeve that was preventing me from eating. But what you are feeling is completely normal just a couple weeks post-op. I've also been very weak as well and my first 3 weeks or so was the worst. I could barely get up and take a shower and when I did I was like you and I immediately had to lay back down because I was exhausted! I was like what the heck is this!? But like before it did get better and it still is. I still comabt weakness and exhaustion but I've learned how to move past it. Typically I'll just take a seat for about 5 minutes or so when I get really tired and when I get light headed I try to drink half of an ensure, a handful of nuts, or a light mini babel cheese (I am on solids). My doctor suggested ensure as well in the beginning for my dizzy spells because they offer a few more calories than most Protein Shakes. Let me know if you need anything. You don't have to do this alone we are here for you.

I'm 5 months post op and still don't feel myself at times I'm very depressed and although I'm loosing weight i don't feel myself at all.

I've been extra emotional since the surgery too :-( I have no motivation and don't feel like working out, instead a drink here and there will make things better.

I was thinking of consulting my surgeon but not sure what to do about it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
