Irritable bowel solution

Recommended Posts

I have had IBS since I was in my 20s, lo, these many years ago. I was having Constipation with the band because I can't eat a lot of salad with my IBS. I have found the solution though it's not necessarily low cal. I eat an oatmeal raisin cookie everyday and my bowel has straightened out beautifully. I hate oatmeal in a bowl and douse it with sugar and butter to make it palatable. The oatmeal cookie has calories, but fewer than I slather on a bowl of oatmeal and it works. Just thought I might mention this for other who have IBS. It is literally a pain in the a** as well as the stomach and the intestines. I simply cannot eat a regular salad, so I stick with cooked veggies, but even those weren't helping the constipation. The oatmeal cookie did the trick.

Looks like I am just following you around the site tonight!!!

My Dr, recommended an OTC stool softener, taken 2 times a week. I try to remember it, and usually get it close to twice weekly, and have had no problems. He did say to watch and make sure the one I got did not have additional laxative, and to stay away from the Fiber pills, that they could prove to be VERY problematic with the band.

I like cookies---so I like the solution!!!

He did not elaborate on the laxative issue, he did say the fiber pills or a metamucil type of product can swell in the pouch and not pass through easily, because you cannot get enough Water at one time to liquify it enough. I was convinced I didn't want to try that!!!

Why not one with an added laxative? Dependance? I also wonder why not fiber pills. I can imagine they would bloat? Thanks for the input.

I don't think oatmeal Cookies come with added laxative, but I have to say they work. Plus they taste a lot better than Metamucil or laxatives.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
