Just home from the hospital, And I have a question...

Recommended Posts

I just had my gasrtic sleeve surgery on Tuesday, February 26. I slept away most of Tuesday. When I was finally alert on Wednesday, I really couldn't see anything close up. Everything was very very blurry.

I do have reading glasses, but I rarely wear them. This was really alot different. If I want to see or read anything, I have to hold it at arms length. My eyes have never been this bad. The Dr thought it might be from the anestesia & my nurse thought it was from pain meds. Has anyone else had this problem, and if you did, how long will it last? It seems like my pupils wont dialate??? I have had previous surgeries and never had this side effect. I haven't had any pain meds since 1am this morning.

I meet with the dr on Monday for a follow up & he said if thing don't change with my eyes he's going to refer me to an optometrist.

I don't know for sure, but I think blurry vision can happen with any surgery. I'm not sure the exact cause, but I think it has to do with Fluid shifts as you eat much less salt and get rid of Water weight. Stay on top of your hydration for sure

My husband had this exact problem when he was hospitalized a few years ago and had emergency surgery. They were never sure if it was the anesthesia or the pain meds or heavy duty antibiotics, but it DID resolve pretty quickly as he recovered. I hesitate to tell you, but for him it was several weeks. I'd guess that since our VSG proceedure is not as involved as what he went through you'll probably be right as rain sooner than that... but your doctor will help and an optometrist sure can offer some insight. Be well!

so sorry you are going through this. It could be any number of things, but I had vision issues in the hospital and one of the nurses suggested maybe it was from the Percocet. They switched me to Demarol and for me, the vision issues improved right away. Your mileage may vary....narcotics behave so differently in different people.

I have several threads here that people said it was from the anti nausea meds... Are you taking those ?

I always get this when I take phenergan (an anti nausea medication) I had to take it a lot during pregnancy for severe morning sickness! It could definitely be from anti nausea meds if you have any of them in your system, I know a lot of them have that side effect!!!

I had surgery on the 19th and had the same issue. I didn't take any anti nausea meds (other than what they may have given me b4 surgery) and I only took 2 pain pills and a couple anxiety pills. I am diabetic and take insulin and my blood sugars & insulin intake have not been what they usually are so I wasn't sure if it was that or what. It lasted about 5~6 days and now im back to normal (well as normal as I can be I guess) I think all in all our bodies have been turned upside down and inside out and a little blurry vision is acceptable......lol I hope you recovery quickly and have much success with your new sleeve :}

I just did a bit more reading, and if you were given some at the hospital (anti nausea meds) it could take several days to leave your system and get your eyesight back to normal..

Hope that helps :)

That's my thought to. Pre-op the put a scopolamine patch on me that I would wear for 3 days. They told me it could cause blurry vision.

I had my surgery on the25th and came home today also. I had the exact sme thing happen. I could watch tv fine but looking at my phone to text or read here and it was impossible. Did they put a scopolamine patch behind your ear for nausea? I had one and when I spoke to the doctor he believe that was the culprit. The medication in it can cause your pupils to dilate something causing the blurred vision. I took mine off this morning and it is slowly resoliving. Hope this helps.

Yeah, my nurse told me that once I get home, if my eyesight isn't like it was, don't go rushing to the eye doctor, just give it a few days to clear out.

      Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

        Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
