artificial sweeteners

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 30/11/2012 and I have found that I cant stand the taste of artificial sweeteners, even splenda. I tried having some crystal light as a way of getting some variety and more Fluid but it was AWFUL. I felt sick afterwards and the taste was horrible. all I could taste was the splenda in it.

has anyone else experienced this? Im kinda bummed cause I would like to enjoy a drink other then Water all the time.

Yup...I'm right there with you. I drink Water (with lemon), Decaf tea, or decaf coffee, using sugar free Creamer (again no aftertaste if you use the little cups) or just plain half n half.

I make my own yogurt and my own granola. It is nearly impossible to find a yogurt without a TON of sugar in it! I use honey with the granola, but a very small amount. Also...I do use the Splenda brown sugar mix for yogurt and for oatmeal. It's not all Splenda so you don't get the nasty aftertaste, but it isn't all sugar either and I only use 1/2 teaspoon in a serving.

I use plain yogurt and add either agave or stevia as a sweetener. I don't use any artificial sweeteners, they taste awful and incredibly toxic. Same for drink mixes, crystal lite pur uses stevia, u can add lemon juice and stevia, and market pantry makes one that is stevia sweetened . Also, Vitamin Water zero is naturally sweetened with stevia. My fav is the squeezed lemonade

Yes!!!! I was just saying this!! I used to be able to enjoy anything sugar free and now the taste is so potent. Gross. Why did this happen when we need sugar free the most?!! :0/

I actually went out and bought a yogurt maker. Mine makes 7, 7.5 oz. jars. You can do it without one, but I was a little nervous and figured a yogurt maker would work best for me. Essentially, you heat milk (I use 1%) to a particular temperature (don't remember for sure what it is), quick cool it back down to 110 degrees, add a starter (can be powdered or just a container of plain yogurt), pour into your jars/containers, put it in the machine and set it for 10 hours, and then refrigerate immediately. They recommend that you don't add any fruit or flavoring until after the yogurt sets, and it keeps for 10 days. You can look for recipes on the internet that don't use a machine...or get a machine. I like it better than what I get from the store, and if I make it plain, which I always do, I can use it for dips or dressings too.

I also make my own yogurt with the same kind of yogurt maker with the little glass jars. It's not enough for the whole family, but I think it will be perfect after I'm sleeved. For every 4 cups of milk I add 1 cup of dry milk and it seems to set up better. The best dried milk I've found is Bobs Red Mill...doesn't taste yucky to me like carnation.

You need a good thermometer, and I use a digital one...think I got it from Walmart for not too much.

It's delicious. I started a Bulgarian strain that was more tart and it came out really runny. Then I started adding powdered milk to it and it thickened up. I haven't made Greek yogurt yet but plan to. You just drain it in an old teeshirt or cheese cloth and let it hang for about an hour to thicken it. Nothing fancy, but it saves a lot of money.

It only takes about 15 minutes or so to get the milk to temp and back down and mix in the starter. Once that's done, the rest happens on it's own. I usually do it right before I go to bed on a Saturday or Sunday night and then by the time I get up in the morning it is ready for the fridge. If I do it on Sunday night I can even take a jar to work with me Monday morning since it will be in the refrigerator most of the day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
