What to tell work people

Recommended Posts

I went with hiatal hernia. I was diagnosed with one during my EGD but more importantly, hernia repair includes soft foods right after surgery as part of the recovery.

I am very fortunate to work in a very understanding and supportive workplace. Most know my struggle with my weight and unexpected health complications (Pseudotumor Cerebri). I have openly discussed my upcoming surgery. Not all agree, but are very supporting my decision (while thinking I'm crazy I'm sure, lol). I have to eat with these people every day and in the upcoming months, I'm going to need all the support I can get. I feel so lucky to work with such amazing people. :)

I didn't mind my co workers knowing. Maybe because I'm s nurse and I feel close to most of them, but I also knew I needed their support when I'm at work. I am lucky that all of my coworkers have been positive and supportive. But this is a journey for me so I figured being upfront was best. It is a personal decision for everyone:)

At first I didn't want my coworkers to know because the majority of them r overweight, and I've noticed the ones that r overweight did not support me and just judged me more than others. But I did tell them eventually and it seems as though I've inspired some to be healthy, and one of them that actually joined a gym lol

I told everyone. For me, it was liberating. I've already dealt with people saying they don't support the decision, etc., but that is nothing compared to the overwhelming support people have shown for me. It's almost made me cry a couple times, how nice people have been.

And anybody who speaks out against it will have to deal with the fact that they are powerless to change me. I know I'm making the right decision, and I make my decisions for me, not anybody else.

I told some people. Found it easier to tell people I wasn't close to than close friends. Mostly I told others hat I had a hietal hernia repaired and bc of that have to watch what I eat hence the weight loss. I had tell my HR person and the company owner and I think she told some people but not much I can do about that at this point. Told hubby under penalty of death that he couldn't let his family know bc they like to amuse themselves making fun of people.

I agree, I don't go out and yell it off the rooftop, but anyone that has asked, or notice I have told the truth. I have been amazed at the outpouring of support coming from my family, friends and coworkers. I think sometimes we don't give credit to people around us. If they talk about me..I don't care (because I'll be skinnier than them soon..neener neener) :)

I tried not sharing with others at work. I feel that my health is my business. I lost over 100 pounds in a little less than 9 months. This is so rapid that people started asking me point blank if I had surgery. I HATE lying, so boy did it irk me when this happened. I don't say to people, "wow, it looks like uve put on quite a bit of weight. Have u been eating more?,". The other one I get is the, "r u okay. U have lost so much weight. R u having health issues?" I would never in a million years say this to people. It's like saying, "oh, is ur thyroid acting up. U r looking overweight. U just keep gaining." Grrr. As u can tell it frustrates the heck out of me. People lack boundaries. My point is this- I wish u the best of luck in keeping it to urself if that's what u choose, but be prepared for the noseys!

Haha! Love it. Yeah, that was my strategy. If people ask, they're gonna find out. :)

Isn't it do strange the questions that people feel justified in asking? Sometimes I feel like going, "You're asking some really personal questions. I'm worried about you, hon. Do you have an anti-social personality disorder?"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
