Pain above my left shoulder? Day 7

Recommended Posts

Have you had this pain since the surgery? Left shoulder pain is a very common symptom of a leak. You should phone your doc about it if it's a new pain or if it continues for more than a day or so.

I've nvr heard that my dr told me even before the surgery about the gas getting stuck in your left shoulder. I don't believe there's a leak...

You don't feel a leak hun...you feel the symptoms and shoulder pain (left sided) is one of the big symptoms. If your doc isn't worried don't worry, but if you haven't mentioned it, do. Leaks kill.

Mine hurt for about a week in gradually lessening amounts before it was all gone.

And just to be clear...that's why I asked if she had them since the surgery. They're more concerning if they come on a few days later than if they're there all along, especially as you say, getting better as time goes on :)

Yup. If you have no pain then WHAM, your shoulder starts hurting. Get to the doc ASAP.

I used gas x and a heating pad. Worked like a champ for me though it sounds like yours is way more painful than what I experienced. Good luck to ya

It has nothing to do with the anesthesia. It's from the CO2 they use to inflate the surgical field. Some CO2 gets trapped and left behind after surgery and it irritates the phrenic nerve which starts in the neck and ends in the diaphragm.

you are absolutely correct I misspoke/mistype due to sleep deprivation ( night shift)...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
