Complications and after care?

Recommended Posts

I emailed my local surgeon's office to tell them that I have decided not to fight insurance or wait any longer. I have decided to go to MX. I knew they would try to talk me out of it. He emails me back saying he supports my choice blah blah blah but i really need to thank about this more. Well I leave 3/6 so its not really much to THINK about at this point! However this is what he put in his last line of the email.

Jenn, I suggest you also consider the necessity for follow ups and aftercare. No one expects a complication, but in the event of an emergency, you should also consider making plans for that. Generally, Dr. Richard and other Doctors do not assume the care for someone who has a procedure outside of the country.

Please let me know what you think about this...

Thank you Jenn.

Now this is really what bothers me. What if i do have a complication!? Are the Dr's Here just going to refuse to give me care!? I don't think I need follow ups except for my blood work which my PCP can do right? Now I am scared YET AGAIN...

That's so not true with all drs. What a poop! My surgeries were all in MX and when I had complications (bands) there were several different bariatric drs more than happy to help me. Fact, I had one that didn't charge me.. ! You can see your PCP for after care and if there's more serious concern they will locate a dr.

Jeeze Louise... What ever happen to the ethical obligation drs agree to when they graduate? Some drs just SUCK!

This has been one of my concerns. But what if you lived in Vermont and had surgery there. Then you moved to Arizona and had some issues. A doctor there is going to help you. Also, I think it's a scare tactic and some stupid Dr. code of I'm not going to touch another doctor's patient.

I agree, your Dr. is being a major poop! (only name calling I will ever do in this forum) But he is!

From what I have read in here, most folks who choose to go to Mexico can usually follow up with their family Dr. for labs and such. In the rare event there is a complication, I have no doubt you can find a Dr. that is willing and happy to treat you. I call major BS on this Dr!

I'm sure you have considered all your options and are making the decision that is best for you. It really pisses me off when someone tries to undermine the decisions of others for their own gain! Grrr...

I understand feeling discouraged by your doctor's email. However he does bring up an important point, will your insurance cover you should you have an unauthorized procedure? I would worry less about who provides your aftercare and more about if your care would be

covered. While no one wants a complication, you do have to be prepared. Good luck on your upcoming surgery.

Although disappointing, at least he armed you with the knowledge that you are on your own when you return. I wish you well.

Maybe you could call some other surgeons in the area to see if the offer care to previously sleeved patients.....Good Luck!!

I think your doctor has a serious ego problem.

My doctor worked WITH my Mexico doctor to make sure I got the treatment I needed. He saw me himself for post op when I was back only a few days, and he is doing a one month check with blood work to find out how I am doing with all of my systems.

In addition, I DID run into a complication when I got home. The hospital, doctors and everyone else treated me just like they always had even with the knowledge I had my surgery out of the country.

If they really cared about the oath they took, they would not alienate a patient for doing something good for her help.

Thanks everyone! I feel better this morning. I am still going to MX. I have put all my fears and worries in God's hands and I really feel at peace. I'm in ATL so I'm sure that I can find another Dr. That will provide me care if needed.

My insurance will cover complications if I'm self pay the only exclusion I see is if I decided to get the band and needed to get it removed it would need to be a real emergency and medically needed before they would pay.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
