just getting started

Recommended Posts

Just joined the group. I have been reading some experiences of individuals on the boards. The information is very useful and much appreciated. I have been overweight since my teen years, and I am now forty with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and severe sleep apnea. My wife had gastric bipass surgery two years ago and lost 110 pounds. I have tried every diet under the sun. I always lose weight, but then put it back on plus some. I am scheduled for my first doctor's appointment Nov. 27th. I so want to perminantly lose the weight and get healthy. Anyway, I just want to say hi. Hopefully, I will be approved for the procedure. I will keep everyone up to date. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Regards,

Keith

Welcome to LBT Keith!!

Look around, and maybe bump your thread in the morning, when more people are up and about!!!

I love my band, and feel it is by far the best thing I ever did for myself.

Is your wife happy with her bypass surgery? Why did you opt for banding instead? Not that it matters, just my natural nosiness!!!

Anyway---look around, ask any questions you may be having. Everyone here has been very helpful....it's a great site!

Once again...welcome!!

Kat

Welcome to LBT! You will find it's a great place for support and advice and everything in between!! I, too, am a bit curious as to why you've chosen the band since your wife had the full GB...

Good luck, too, to apinksoprano on your surgery tomorrow!

I just feel like it is a more moderate approach to losing weight over the other options. There seems to be more control using this procedure, and I have seen my wife lose a tremendous amount of weight, but she did suffer quite alot during that time. To this day she is prone to getting sick at the drop of a hat.

On another note, thanks for the warm welcome and words of encouragement.

Regards,

Keith

Welcome, Keith! I, too, am new to the site (I think I have been in here for whole days) and have my first appointment with my PCP to simply get the ball rolling on this journey. I have already found that everyone here is so completely kind and supportive. Good luck to you on this journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
