No whole pills... chewables only?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine was sleeved a month ago and I asked her when she was able to start swallowing whole pills... she said never. Her doctor told her she had to have liquid or chewable Vitamins from here on out.

I am a bit frustrated at hearing this because I've been going out of my way to obtain supplements, spent quite a bit of money on them, I've got my Bariatric Advantage multi, my B12, Biotin, zinc, etc. -- NONE of which are chewable.

What am I supposed to do with this stuff? Do you guys crush your pills and mix with liquids or what?

Or can you actually swallow pills post-op? Some advice is needed, thank you!!

That is a good question. I am only taking one blood pressure pill right now and I am crushing that. I do take a capsule Dexlatin. I think capsules are ok. I am seeing my surgeon tomorrow and that is one of my questions. Will I ever be able to take a pill without crushing it again.

I was swallowing my Vitamins and Calcium pills whole (1 at a time), by week 2. Haven't had any problems. My doctor told me that I could take chewables or whole pills after I got past week 1.

My doctor never said that I couldn't swallow whole pills. In fact, I was on the 3 pill regimine for H pylori and while 2 of the pills were gell caps, one was a regular horse pill. I would think that if you aren't allowed to swallow pills whole, then he would have said something.

They had me taking my Migraine pills on day two in the hospital and after the first month i switched to pill Vitamins because the chewable bariatric ones are gross. I take chewy Calcium, Fiber and the rest are pills. I was told that as long as i can swallow them there is no problem.

I asked my doctor and he said I can have whole pills as soon as I feel ready. I absolutely DETEST chewables so I know I'll stick with the Vitamin routine a lot better with pills.

I also checked the post op paperwork for MU which has a very reputable program, and they also say whole pills are fine.

Thank you for the great advice... I feel like I'm crowdsourcing better information. My friend, who is having a hard time with chewables, might be pleased to know this.

I am on a certain kind of Migraine medicine that absolutely can't be crushed... plus I spent about $60 on supplements in pill form, I was pretty pissed!

Thanks everyone, I will crush until I feel I can handle full pills (unless directed otherwise by dr. aceves).

Cheers!

I was able to swallow my pills (with the surgeon's approval) by day 4 post-op. I have had no problem with them at all. My Vitamins, though, are all chewable or sublingual - mostly because I don't like taking giant pills and vitamins tend to be huge. I also love the taste of my chewable vitamins.< /p>

What kind of chewables are you using that taste so great? I have a problem with the Vitamin taste...

That's a relief, I can go a few days without taking my Iron, then just start taking my pills again. Was not looking forward to spending all that money on chew-able iron.

When you swallowed the whole pills did it cause you any problems? I am on week 2 post op and have to start the 3 pills but I was told to crush. Well needless to say I crushed and mixed with food and right back up it came. There's got to be another way or I may never get rid of this bacteria and that scares me to death!

Before my surgery I took all my pills in one handful - about 7 at a time. After the surgery I was very nervous and took only 1 at a time - no problems whatsoever. Now I take 2 at a time. Again - no problems. I was also prescribed percocet after the surgery - tablets. I didn't need them, but my surgeon didn't prescribe liquid pain killers. Every surgeon is different, but I truly had no issues with the pills.

I seen my doc today and he told me my belly needs at least a month to heal and taking pills will be no problem.

One of my regular pills is a bit of a horse pill, and i was allowed to try to take it with minimal Water on day 2 - no problems. I felt it in my chest (???) and it was a little uncomfortable but that's all. I believe if it had got stuck I'd have vomited it back up - not great for day 2. A week later I have no problem - take multiple tablets, one at a time, pacing myself quite slowly.

Of course we're all different, so you have to work out how you will manage it, carefully.

I bought chewable Vitamins and haven't opened them - plan to go back to my usual one. Will sell the chewables on eBay.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
