what is a good alternative to morphine since morphine doesent work to well

Recommended Posts

I had surgery last year (partial hysterectomy) and was given morphine it only seemed to work for 20-45 minutes then wore off, the nurses seemed surprised and asked me if I did drugs recreationally...uh.... NO I do not. lol

Also the oxycontin doesent really do to much to me either. They gave me something in place of the morphine that really worked like I believe it should have but I cant remember the name of it I want to say Toradol. But I looked that up and its just an anti inflamatory.

Has anyone taken Toradol in place of morphine?

I want to talk to the Dr about this before my surgery so that I am not worried she will give me morphine and then I will just suffer.

Any ideas of alternatives?

I have the unfortunate problem of having a low tolerance for pain and a high tolerance to supposed powerful pain meds...just my luck

I always ask for Dilaudid as a morphine replacement.

Was it maybe Demarol and not Toradol?

The morphine worked great for me for the first day post-op. I had a pump set up by the anesthesiologist and could hit it every 15 minutes as needed (it's set so you can't OD). For a while I was trying not to use it and the pain was awful. The nurse told me not to be a hero--that's what it's there for. LOL.

Once I was done with that, they switched me to Percocet, which I hated. It made my vision all weird and I felt really anxious on it. So they switched me to Demarol and Tylenol (you can't have Tylenol with Percocet bc Percocet already has Tylenol and you could overtax your liver). This combo was better for me. Your mileage may vary. I'm grateful to the nurse who suggested that maybe I wasn't feeling well bc of the Percocet, bc I also got to go home with Demarol instead of Percocet.

Toradol is a pain med but it is of the class of meds known as NSAID's which you will find with a little research on here are usually considered a no no after VSG. http://www.drugs.com/toradol.html as it is commonly used for pain control after most surgeries it is probably what you are thinking of but probably not an option this time. Dilaudid and Demarol are good pain meds but as they are opiods like morphine and Oxycontin it probably won't be very helpful either. Fentanyl is a common pain med that while it is also an opiod seems to work better for a lot of people who have immunities to the others. Good Luck.

Toradol is very effective against visceral pain (gut) pain. When they say to stay away from NSAIDS, they're talking about ones taken orally. They are very likely to make your stomach bleed and ulcerate. Hope this helps! I'm an RN by the way lol

NSAIDS are a no-no if they're taken orally, but when you're in the hospital and have an IV I highly recommend Toradol. I was in the same situation and nothing would help my pain until they finally gave me toradol. I couldn't get up and walk until I had it. Then they started adding a small dose of dilaudid to go with it. Toradol is magic magic. I even preferred it after my C-section.

I think one thing to keep in mind is that your response to any pain meds is highly individual. I would try what the standard is for your surgeon/anesthesiologist (unless you already know you don't do well on one of their preferred drugs), and if that doesn't work, ask to be switched.

I am allergic to morpine and dilaudid, so the Dr put me on Toradol, which worked really well for me.

It could have been toradol but if they were looking for something along the lines of morphine it was most likely dilaudid.

I'd chose toradol too. Or if I didn't mind the sedative effect I'd pick Fentanyl. Fentanyl just makes pain melt away.

Actually, hydrocodone and oxycodone do not contain codeine, although they are in the same drug class. (I'm a prescriber). But I agree that your doctor will come up with options that will work for you. Nobody wants you to be in too much pain!

Deborah, I'm allergic to codeine & it's cousins; they make me throw up. Are there any other drugs besides hydrocodone & oxycodone that I need to avoid?

Thanks!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
