Pickles contain vinegar which helps stabilize the sugar levels in our blood. Acetic Acid in pickles helps reduce the amount of insulin released in our body! Depending how far post op you are, this is a nice, low cal snack. If you are tolerating other solid foods well, give it a try. If you are worried start with the inside flesh and leave the skin. Just remember to chew well!

As with everything when things are allowed varies widely based on your dr. I personally started eating pickles blended into my tuna salad during mushies at 2 weeks post op. Good Luck.

I couldnt have pickles until I was probably 7 weeks out.. and I can only have the no sugar added bread and butter chips.. which for me were my favorite to begin with.. and now I can have those and they are so delicious.

Omg pickles!!!! I miss pickles so much!! I still have my band in until my revision in May and pickles are a guaranteed "stuck" food with my band so I haven't had pickles in YEARS and they have been one of my favorites since I was a toddler!!! I didn't even think about being able to eventually eat pickles again! :) You guys just made my day!!!

Once upon a time there was a fair maiden who was put on a pre-op diet for 10 days before her VSG. There were only about 10 foods on her approved list of foods to consume. On of those items was pickles. The fair maiden was tickled to death that there was no limit on how many pickles she could eat in any given day.

So the diet progressed, and the fair maiden went to the store and purchased a large container of large whole dill pickles! Everyday mid-afternoon she would eat one of those dill pickles.

One day when the pre-op diet was working the fair maiden's last nerve, she ate two pickles. One in the afternoon, and one in the evening. After taking the last bite of the second pickle, the fair maiden started feeling an uneasiness in her stomach. Soon she was writhing in pain. After an hour of misery, the fair maiden hurled.

Yes, the fair maiden is me. I learned some very valuable lessons that day, like...there is such thing as too many pickles in a day! :) And dr's allow pickles as a free food on pre-op diet, because it would kill you to consume any more than a 100 calories from them. Finally, I learned that pickles are the devil.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
