Recommended Posts

Hmm was getting a little concerned about one day liquid diet of Only liquids the day before surgery

did anyone else only have to do liquids on only the day before?

I see alot of ppl out their struggling with 2 weeks of only liquids feeling a bit guilty.

My surgery is on Wednesday so I am just going to go all liquids from today til then.

I know its too shrink the liver or make it softer.

I didn't have to do a super restrictive pre-op diet. Just liquids the day before. My surgeon said its "just going to piss you off." I really like my surgeon. He didn't seemed at all concerned about a liver issue.

I was told to do a week of liquid diet to shrink the liver and make it easier to get to the stomach...It's a good way to lose some weight too. I was surprised that I lost 10 pounds that week with a few cheats.

Good luck with your surgery. Hope you have a speedy recovery

Im Pretty sure it depends on the surgeons approach and the patients quality of health. I only had to do a 1 day liquid diet as well. Im 10 days post op and down 23 pounds!! Good luck to you!!

There is a lot of variation from dr to dr on the preop diet. I believe that when the dr's order the longer preop diets it is also to help the patient to be able to better adjust when they get to the post op stage, this way you can get your base need to cheat on the liquid diet out of the way when it won't really hurt you. But that is just my opinion. Good Luck.

I also only had to do liquid for one day before surgery. Water only for 24 hours before. Previous to that I had lost about 10 pounds over the course of getting approved for surgery so, I guess that was enough for him. I had no problems whatsoever without doing a pre-op diet.

My surgeon requires everyone to do a 4week pre-op diet. No exceptions from what I'm told.

My understanding is this is another thing that was passed on from the rules of bypass surgery...which is more extensive. Many of the doctors no longer require it...it just depends on your surgeon. Just like all the various rules of eating post-op...my doc cleared me for regular food after week 2, when others go 6-8 wks.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
