Diet soda ever again?

Recommended Posts

I understand that we can't have diet soda or any carbonation now because of the gas bubbles but has anyone ever been able to drink any carbonated beverage again?

I will be honest, and I am sure I will be slammed for this, but I honestly don't buy into the whole "Carbonation will stretch your sleeve" theory. Maybe in the old days, but now, when they do the sleeve, they remove the stretchy part of your stomach. I just don't believe carbonation is going to stretch my stomach. Sorry. I enjoy diet coke and I enjoy the occasional beer. My stomach has not showed any signs of stretching, nor has it had an adverse reaction on my weight loss.

Hehehe.. Your going to be in trouble now Susan!

:P

I haven't had a soda In almost two years I was addicted to them, drank them all day. So I will not have any now..

But Susan is right you will see MUCH debate over whether you should or not! :)

To each his own is what I say!

I am with Susan. If I am going to drink any sodas, I tend to let them get close to flat. That being said, if they are not flat, the excess carbonation comes right back up in the form of a burp. It isn't in my stomach long enough to cause any stretching. I don't drink soda often, but it has become my treat to myself every once in a while, and I thoroughly enjoy it!

When in maintainance soda won't kill you, but diet soda is full of poison sweetners and actually has been shown to cause weight gain and appetite stimulation even though it is zero calories. Drink mostly Water and if you must have some poison every now and then you will probably survive. I don't really care for how soda feels when I drink it, but I have had one every now and then.

My surgeon told me everything in moderation. I wont drink diet soda due to the aspartame but I will allow myself a regular one from time to time.

I've had a sip or two of diet sodas over the past year and a half, but honestly, after you go a few months without drinking any, you will likely find the taste is nothing like what you remembered. Before my surgery I was a Diet Coke fiend, and would have 6-8 cans every day w/o fail. One day about six months after surgery I was on a flight and beverage service came around, and I decided to try Diet Coke. OMG it was horrendous! I swear it tasted like poison. I took one sip, almost gagged, thought something surely was wrong, and tried another sip -- ugh!!!! I couldn't finish it. I've tried Sprite Zero and Fresca, and those aren't quite as awful, but I just really hate carbonated drinks now. Crystal Light is my beverage of choice. I make up a pitcher, pour some in those double insulated tumblers with the plastic straws and carry it around with me everywhere I go.

Oh, and the great news is, if you are a soda-holic, you will be saving $$$ over time once you get sleeved. I used to spend at least $40 a month on diet soda. Now one container of Crystal Light lasts as long as a case of Diet Coke, and at 1/4 the cost. Seriously, I think I've saved at least $500 on soda expenses since I've been sleeved. (Another thing I love about my sleeve!)

I am back with a new name so please don't think I am a newbie. My Nut said that some people can tolerate diet soda and that it's fine to have if you can.

Lol, why didn't you just request a new user name on your old account?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
