Alternatives to a protein bar

Recommended Posts

I'm on the liquid diet. Surgery is Tuesday.

My Dr. allows me a Protein Bar each day. (200 calories or less & 5 grams of Protein or more)

Can I eat something else instead? Like 3 Oz. grilled chicken & a cup of peas? That would be under 200 calories, more than 5G Protein, & a helluva lot more satisfying.

I think that asking the Dr. might give you a better answer. Were they specific about the bar, or just said eat 200 cals and 5 gms of Protein? if you are on a liquid diet, i might assume that they pretty much are looking for you to stay on liquids primarily.

You'd better ask your surgeon about that. I personally agree with you on that.

However, if you have to do the Protein Bars, there are several with 10g or more of Protein that are still under 200 calories. Special K has Protein meal bars that are 10g and 190 calories, and Nature Valley also has a Protein Bar now.

Quest are the best. They have many flavors, taste good, have 20 g of Protein and 20 g of Fiber. I eat one a day, for both these reasons. I ordered mine online from Amazon, but you can get them at local gyms, elsewhere I'm sure but don't know where.

My personal favorites so far is #1 vanilla Almond (YUM) and #2 Mixed berry. About 200 calories.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
