Hi All,

I am gearing for my VSG on March 7th and I wanted to know if I should purchase Isopure drinks? I've heard that they can be quite nasty but I am trying to find ways to get in Protein immediately after surgery. Please share your experiences. Thank you.

I'm not a big fan of them. They taste fine upfront, but have this funky after taste. I like the Premier brand that you can get at costco or Sams. They only come in chocolate or vanilla, but you can doctor them up all kinds of ways. They aren't terribly sweet and don't have an aftertaste. I am also not a fan of the powders. They never seem to mix well and the taste is never what you expect.

I am one of the rare ones that prefer Isopure to anything else. You can buy just 1 at GNC and try it without investing a lot of $$$ - if you do, I would recommend the Alpine Punch.

For me my tastes changed so much after surgery. Everyone keeps telling me the Premier ones from costco are so good but i had one before surgery and wanted to barf. I haven't tried it again since surgery. I hated muscle milk before surgery and now I like it. The vanilla flavor when its ice cold is good for me. I did get sample packs off the bariatric pantry website I think they're called Matrix (powder) and I wasn't too crazy about those. I did try Chike sample packs (also powder) and they are really good! I bought them online on their website as well. My husband likes the chocolate whey Protein powder from Walmart. There are so many out there, it's almost a trial and error type thing til you find one you like. Good luck! Oh, and I haven't tried the Isopure....

Oh and if you get the powder ones buy at mixer cup with a wire ball in it. You can find them by the Protein drinks at Walmart. They are great! The wire ball helps blend all the powder so you don't have clumps. Just a suggestion.

I agree about taste changing after surgery, I always bought the costco one and loved it, now I tolerate them because I have so much. Whatever you get now, get enough to just get by till surgery, just incase.

P.s Isopure are nasty to me, I only tried one and anytime I think a out trying another kind in my fridge I get nauseous.

I picked up some Isopure that comes in little plastic bottles, like a small Gatorade G2 or Powerade. My NUT recommended sticking one in your purse so you always have something in case you need it.

I tried Isopure, but it has am after taste like lighter Fluid, nasty! GNC has a Protein Shake that has 35, and Myoplex lite has 20 pf Protein they are both decent tasting.

For the first week I'll be using Isopure for my Protein intake since it's clear fluids for me. After I go back to my full fluids, I'll be switching back to my Proteins that I used before starting my preop, monster milk and true nutrition proteins.

i bought a whole case prior to surgery so I could make sure I had something easy for my clear liquid phase. They also really help to get your Protein in when you move on to full liquid phase. I am a fan of them...not all of them. I know most people can't stand them, but I drink them warm/ cold/whatever. Grape and alpine punch are good!!! I find I am not the norm on liking the Isopure so you might want to go grab a few and taste them first.

Isopure was quite sour. I did try the apple melon ad it wasn't bad, just couldn't finish it. I did drink New Whey shots the first 3 days post op at the recommendation of my dietician. Then I tried adding unflavored Unjury to crystal light lemonade and it was gross. I tried different flavored Protein powders, and couldn't tolerate the smell. I started mixing some frozen banana and Peanut Butter in the blender with chocolate powdered protein and milk-tasted and smelled better, but the blender seemed to whip it to twice the amount. I couldn't drink it all. Now I mix two scoops of chike chocolate powder with 7 oz of low fat milk along with 2 tbsp of PB2 powder in a Blender Bottle. I drink with a straw to avoid the smell-something my dietician suggested I try. Look at the blog, theworldaccordingtoeggface, for recipes.< /p>

I thought drinking with a straw was off limits, especially right after surgery.?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
