January Bandsters???

Recommended Posts

Well, now that I have taken off my bandages, I finally feel normal and ready to start exercising.

(I told myself I'd give myself a full week after surgery to just heal up, get used to the post-op diet, and just do the suggested walking.)

Now that the week is over I am ready to get this thing started!

* Monday I hit the gym! I will be back to let you all know how it went!

* I bought the South Beach Diet book - the most recent one that just breaks down the food. Doesn't include all that theory fluff...

* I also created my account on FitDay.com. WOW! I can't believe how few calories I am eating these days. I know that will change when I get to solids, but still, 600 calories a day??? Yikes!

I also need to get WAY more Protein in.

* I put a bunch of Protein Drinks in the fridge. EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control seems to be a good one. Only 110 Calories, 3 grams of fat, 4 grams of carbs, 2 grams of Fiber and 17 g of protein in a 11 oz serving. Plus it's only $4.97 for 4 at Wal-Mart.

So, let me get through the Super Bowl tomorrow (Go Bears!!) and Monday I start!

Hi Shesha! Glad to hear you are doing well. I am on post-op day 5 and was wondering when I could go back to the gym. I forgot to ask my doctor in the hospital. I don't know if I could go back just yet. I guess I'll have to see how I feel.-Gigi:)

Good Morning everyone! Just wanted to check in! I am 5 days post banding and feel good overall. I am still a little sore at my 5 stab wound sites. I am doing better getting my fluids and Protein in. I find that I still have alot of gas. I am able to get rid of it from both ends. I am wondering if this is from the antibiotic that I am on-Keflex 500mg 4x/day. Anyway, I hope this passes. Have a great day-Gigi

I don't know, maybe it's because I'm older than dirt. But there is no way I could have started serious excercise after 7 days post op. You youngsters sure do heal up fast. I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and my port incision still has a little bit of draining (it's almost closed now. I think it will be by tomorrow). So I would definitly be reluctant to hit the gym even now. But I have lost 21 lb since 1/17. Yeah!!

Congrats on your progress, Sheila. It sounds like you are doing great.

Way to go on your weight loss Mark,

I hope your incisions heal quickly! I've had no problems with mine, but they are still a bit sore. I have done a little bit of exercise, nothing that is jarring. My surgery was on the 16th. My DH wants to go horseback riding today and I'm dying to and afraid to. I think I will do it and see how it goes. I can always get off!

Walking is still the best. I also have an elipitical that I've been on once. I do need to get going on the exercise in a more regular fashion.

I think all us new banders need to keep in mind we are healing still and to not do anything that will set that back. But there are many things that we can do to move forward in our new life journey!

I'm 2 weeks post op and can't seem to get enough energy. I feel great, no pain since the day of surgery, except the gas pains! Decided last night I definitely needed to be taking Vitamins or something. Got up this morning and tried to crush the "horse pills", mixed it up with pudding....NASTY! Then I had one that was a capsule....dumped it in the pudding.....DOUBLE NASTY! So I resorted back to the gummy vitamins, took two and just can't seem to get them chewed up small enough. What are you guys doing with pills that you took before surgery that are capsules or large caplets?

FYI, Shesha,

I was banded on the 31st, so still am very new to this, but my Dr's instruction are to not do any heavy lifting or gym exercises until at least four weeks post op. The strain in the abdominal muscles interfers with the healing.

He recommended to just walk, walk, walk.

I know I am anxious to start at the gym also, but am scared of messing up something before it heals completly.

5Jacks, I'm a 1/23 bander. I've been using liquid vitamins. Just a shot a day. Also a chewable Calcium with Vitamin D added. I can tell about mid-day if I haven't taken them. I know some people just use the chewable vitamins for kids and those seem to work for them as well. Also are you getting your Protein? That seems to make a difference too.

I was told i could walk for 3 weeks and then start to exercise more. No cruches for 3 months and just being careful with twisting.

Hello To All !

I am 6 days post op and I am delighted to find this Forum.

I have been trying to read all 117 pgs of posts before I posted but I just decided to jump in.

There is so much Grrreat info coming from everyone ! I am a Sr Citizen compared to most of you @ 59.

I just retired in May after 25 yrs of being The School Nurse (Hence the user name) Lovingly given to me yrs ago by the students. I am Not an RN but a Health Tech.

I started this Lap Band Process in Sept trying to get our Ins. Tri Care(Military) to pay for it .... It was denied 3xs they would pay for the by Pass But consider the Lap Band experimental. We finally gave up and paid for it ourselves. Tricare did pay for the hospital stay and all the work ups since I had a hernia which was repaired at the time of my surgery.

I am doing OK but have had some problems with shoulder pain that seems to be directly related to the gas in my belly. I have other complications which is the need for a hip replacement which means my mobility is very compromised. And I am sure that is why I am having so much gas UGH!

Today I woke up and decided that I was going to have some Cream of Wheat. I am one of those who were on Protien shakes 2 weeks prior to surgery Myoplex from GNC. I can not even look at the box with out getting sick to my stomach it was awful !!! Anyway the Cream Of Wheat was wonderful and sat very well. Tomorrow I am trying Light N Fit Yogurt.

This is a huge thread but so full of good info and encouragement.

Thank You All for being out there.

I usually average 700 - 800 calories and about 40-60 grams of Protein. Was released to start hard Proteins this weekend so that should help some! I don't keep track of anything on the weekends but am faithful on record keeping during the week. Just know that I should be taking Calcium, and a Multi-Vitamin, just haven't found one I can choke down! Thanks!

Welcome Joanne!

This site has helped me so much! I love it! I loved having Anderson's creamy split pea, V8, drinkable yogurt, sugar free Jello, sugar free fudgesicles when I was where you are post op.

I used a lot of Gas x strips for the gas too. Seemed to help! :clap2:

Hey Marjon,

Again - thank you for the great post! I am one of the newly banded folks that is terrified of a PB! I cry when I vomit preband. I dread the thought of it - its just something that I have to deal with.

I bought baby forks and spoons to help me out with Portion Control for when I go to mushies and then solids. If I didn't do that, I'd be PBing immediately for sure. :hungry:

Hi Sherilynn,

Like you, I have a fear of vomiting. However, once my stomach swelled I started to PB. It is really nothing like vomiting. It is more like a burp with a little bit of saliva or whatever you ate. Not the discomfort of vomiting.

My stomach swelled due to problems with my liver. I'm much better now and I'm drinking liquids like a fiend.

It is a little difficult being on a liquid diet on Super Bowl. But my husband and I decided to stay home and eat Soup.

I take a really good liquid Vitamin that has everything in it called Glacial Milk. I bought it at Sams Club but you can find it on the internet too!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
