January Bandsters???

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone -

Well, I am day 3 post op and am HUNGRY. From what I have heard, this stage through the first fill is the worst. I am little jealous of the people that are already feeling restriction but I want to focus on healing at this time. I know others are in the same boat and I'll make it through. But is hard... I keep telling myself it will be worth it in the long run!

I'm back. Banded, and doing REALLY well. Shockingly. For a second when I woke up, I was one of the few that wanted to ask if I was really banded, until I saw the bandages.

I have the steri stripes (sp?) on. They told me to let them fall off.

I'm getting in bed, and will talk to you more later.

I am so glad to hear you are doing so well!!! Keep us posted!!

Our doctors are putting us on a 2 wk liquid diet for 2 wks b4 surgery. Is this standard? It is to lower fat in liver.

I feel I am blessed with the best doctors but it sure puts a damper on that last binge party the night b4 we all joked about!

I felt EXACTLY like you on day 3. When I began to drink my 64 ounces of Water, I realized I was really thirsty, not hungry. I have not been really hungry since.

I am post op day 8 and feeling soooooooooooo good and happy!!!!!! I had my morning coffee (breakfast these days) and am looking forward to some warm soup!!!!!

How are you all doing???

How many of you journal?????

What have you been eating/drinking???

Exercise???

supplements? ????

Weight Loss????

I still have not weighed myself. I just don't want to for the first time in my life. Can you imagine the great surprise I'll have when I do!!!!!!

I think I will when I see a significant change. I have heard of those who wait till the 6 week mark

I haven't been journaling yet, but plan to when I return to NY tomorrow night. I tried beef baby food today. BLAND. I decided to strain a can of vegetable Soup and puree the veggies. That was pretty good and conventional. I also pureed a piece of grilled chicken with homemade carrot soup. Very tasty. I bought tofu grillers (bbq flavor), which I am going to try later. I like tofu so it should be okay. I spoke to my nutritionist who does not want me to take any Protein supplements. She wants me to get all my protein through food because supplements have the tendency to add bulk. I am stuck on the carnation drink, special k Water, crystal light and plain water. I am taking the Centrum chewables. Tasty!!! lol And exercise has just been walking so far.

I haven't weighed myself in a few days. I don't trust the scale here and would rather rely on mine at home. So Monday, I guess. Last I had checked, though, it was 10 lbs. I would love to be 15 down by the time I get back to work on Tuesday. I put my jeans on, and man, what a difference 10 lbs makes. Feels great!

Going into this I had a plan to lose the weight, maintain it for about a year while undergoing some behavior modfication (weight watchers, nutritionist, etc), and then having the band removed. My biggest concern is the limited amount of long term data avail on the effects of silicone/titanium on the body, and the idea of eventual erosion. It is pretty premature to have these thoughts, but am I the only person who has thought about this?

At some point it would be interesting to see the bandster totals from the various months. It seems clear that more and more people are getting banded, but I wonder if its a gradual increase or if its more like an explosion. It would be interesting to see. They've been advertising it on TV, as I'm sure everyone knows. So that must be having an effect as well.

It's an interesting question.

One thing to keep in mind is I think they've been doing this for quite a while in other places even thought it is fairly new here. I think I heard that it's been done for about ten years already in Australia. So some longer term data may start to come out.

Also, I'd be interested in seeing another type of data before taking the band out. That is, what happens to people who take out the band. If most people gain the weight back I'd be very reluctant to take it out. For me I'd be a little skeptical about my own ability to succeed with behavior modification. I feel like I may always need that physical barrier to keep me in line.

So, I guess it's a balance. The health risks from obesity are extreme and if the band helps solve that problem it might be worth some degree of risk with the effects of silicone. I guess everyone will just have to decide for themselves.

But it's a good question.

I had my surgery yesterday. I got in the or at 12:30 and was home by 3:30! I couldn't believe it went that quickly. I was a little sore but no major problems. I havent had much gas pain and I'm hoping it stays that way. My nurse told me to intertwine my fingers and lay my hands flat on my head and push my elbows back as far as possible. She said that opens the esophagus and lets the gas out much quicker. I've had a headache today and I'm tired but other than that I feel great.

rms78645- I don't really feel any restriction yet either. It's possible your stomach isn't as swollen as some others. That's what my nurse told me when I asked her about it during my followup call.

I didn't know that protein supplements add bulk!!!!:faint:

That is the last thing I want. I have been eating cream of split pea and it has a lot of protein. I do not have a mushy stage or I'd add Beans and lentils. My husband said my face looks really thin, but I still haven't weighed. I am going to wait a little more.

My doctor told me it is the same as what they use in medical implants and people don't have those replaced. Even if lap band surgery is new, medical implants, like replacement knees, heart, and everywhere else in the body stay for life.

He said it was meant to stay for life and I plan on keeping mine forever.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
