January Bandsters???

Recommended Posts

I went to my Psych Eval last night. Turns out, I'm not crazy, lol. This Psych has me come to her 4 x per the first year. I have to go see her again on the 8th, then at 6 mos post op, and then at 1 yr post op.

I did like her, she worked in a hospital for 20 yrs with Non surgical weight loss people. She is very familiar with behavior motification when it comes to food. I was impressed. She also suggested the book "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies", She had it sitting on her desk. I think I might purchase the book. I also bought the book, Eating well after Weight loss surgery. I got it off Ebay.

I also paid my deposit to my surgery yesterday ($600) Ouch, that hurt. So, there is no backing out for the surgery.

I also wanted to share something the Psych told me. She asked how my spouse would handle my losing weght. She said many times the "other" person in our life, will become insecure with our new bodies and they don't know how to handle it. I told her he will love the new me and is encouraging, plus he has seen my skinny to fat, fat to skinny, then back to skinny to fat so many times, he is used to my changes. lol.

Also, she warned me that after surgery the Anethesia does some weird things to some people, depression could sit in, but we just have to work thru it. Personally, I don't see that happening to me, I've had 5 surgeries in the past 2 years and have been put under each time. I had no problems.

She also stated that at about 4 to 5 months, we will go thru a grieving stage. We start missing the food. Thats when we start thinking, "why did I do this". By this time, we have lost some weight, but we start missing the "old habits". This is a time we need to be prepared and think of the positive. Perhaps before the surgery, make a list of WHY your doing the surgery. When you start feeling down around 4 to 5 months out, take your list and remind yourself why you did it. She said not all experieince this but some do.

I have a feeling I might experience this. I remember when my cousin (who is also my best friend) got the gastric bypass, I started resenting her a bit. Mainly because we no longer could "enjoy" the food together. We always had lunches, dinners, together when we would get together to scrapbook. We would always have tons of junk food. I would go pick up the delicious "great wall of chocolate" cake from PF CHANGS. Its 7 layers of chocolate, with a rasberry sauce, delish. Her & I would eat the entire thing.

I think I will miss food. I have no doubt about it. However, I will not miss being fat! I will not miss my health problems that go along with being fat. I now realize that I was being selfish towards my cousin when she had the gastric bypass. I was very unsupportive of her and for that I am ashamed of myself. I look back at it and it was all because I resented the fact she would no longer be my "eating" friend. I have since apologized, and now we are looking for other things to enjoy together besides eating junk food. Over New Years Eve, we rented a bunch of movies and worked on belly dancing. lol.

Pinky - thanks so much for the compliment. I always do try to be positive. I always say that worrying and stressing will not change a thing, except it can cause you more wrinkles, High BP, so why worry about things you cannot change.

Jen - Staples? I have heard of some getting staples. I'm sure you will heal of up fine. I am going to ask my doc about it when I go see him on Monday. I want strips darn it, not staples. Mainly because I'm a baby and won't want to have them removed. So glad your feeling better, don't forget to drink your Water, stay hydrated.

Okay, its Friday, I have a ton of paperwork on my desk, I'm taking off work for 3 weeks, so I must get caught up.

Everyone have a wonderful weekend, I usually don't check in on the weekends, but I might be able to.

Hey Sunshine...I still don't have a surgery date twin :cry He He He

I think that by me keeping a daily diary, when I am 4-5 months out, and miss food, and want to pig out...I can look back at my entries, and yell at myself. Realize how I am feeling exactly. I'm being very specific on my entries, how I feel, what I'm feeling, how I look etc....all incentive for 4-5 months out - to help keep me going, and not regretting.:)

Does anyone know if 1 or 2 glasses of wine will hurt 1 week before surgery.

Hello all... I've been reading your thread but not posting because there is only the slimmest of hopes that I will be banded in January 07... but I had to give a shout out to 5Jacks because I am also using Dr. Malley and have my first consult with him on Monday the 8th!

Thanks everyone for posting.... it really does motivate me

I think you should ask your doctor. I wouldn't think 1 glass would be bad, as long as it is a week before surgery. But again, all docs are different, so I would ask your doc to get his okay.

TracyinKS, let us know when your date is so we can add you to the list. :clap2:

Man, we've got to get you a surgery twin!! ANYBODY OUT THERE HAVING SURGERY 1/30/07???? (Thats me shouting to all the pre bandsters out there) Hopefully some brave soul will step forward and claim that date!

I think keeping a food diary is a great idea. I plan on keeping one too. I actually started a little journal on this board, and I will do my best to keep up.

I know for me, I am always looking at the people who have lost so much weight, and I wonder, How did you do it? What did you eat? I want to document everything in my journey to weight loss so I can help anyone new - I'm going to try and record everything I eat, even the bad stuff. lol.

Hi one and all,

I am glad to hear from angyl2314 (Jen) that her surgery went well. Thank you for keeping us posted. It helps so much when the bandsters who go before us tell us what they experienced.

Shesha and Donnalynncrain it looks like the three of us will be having our surgery on the same day. We're triplets! I wish you both all the best.

Now I have a quick question. I know that things can get stuck and on another thread I heard them talk about a PB (productive burp) to get the stuck item out. Is this a natural occurence or is there something we have to do to make it happen i.e. drink Water, lay down etc? Sorry if I grossed anyone out :)

Edie, PBing doesn't necessarily happen because something is stuck...it can also happen when you eat too fast or too big of a bite because the food then backs up a bit into the esophagus. Because it doesn't belong there, it's very uncomfortable. Sometimes, you can wait it out...wait until the food moves on through the band. However, for me, waiting it out doesn't work because your body keeps producing more mucous to move the food down. If the food isn't going down, the mucous doesn't either...so it gets more and more uncomfortable because you more stuff sitting there.

Most of the time, no, you don't have to do anything to PB in this situation. The food isn't in your stomach..it's not quite as bad as throwing up. It's usually just a matter of "letting" the food come back up. In fact, drinking Water usually makes it worse (again, adding more stuff) and laying down makes it worse (since it already wants to come back up). Sometimes, walking around or raising your arms over your head make it better.

Almost everyone with a band, if they have good restriction, will PB at least once.

Cindy

Did your doctor make you pass a psychological exam?

Did he recommend anger management?

Seriously, take a chill pill. People on this board are not your enemies! Or is that just the way that you respond to anyone who happens to say something you don't agree with? If so, then I'll say a little prayer to help you with that.

1) Do you know me?

2) Did you finish school?

3) Can you read?

4) Didn't I say in the previous post that I was done with this?

SO TAKE A READING CLASS!! Have a BLESS DAY;)

Hello all! I just realized that I'm only 4 days away from my surgery, and I'm beginning to get a little excited. Up until now, it just seemed like I was going through the motions, and not really "waking up" to the fact that this is going to really happen. I guess I've been waiting for "the other shoe to drop". Today is my 3rd day on Clear Liquids, and I've already lost 4 pounds -- I know, it's mostly Water, but still, it's 4 pounds that I will never have to see again! My energy is finally starting to return, and I think that maybe that is why I'm beginning to "believe". It is so good reading this thread from the beginning through to now, because you can see the things posted by someone at first, who is now banded, and it's reassuring to know that you have all done great. Keep the comments coming! I may not post much on this thread, but it's the first thing I look at each day when I get home from work.

Okay, this is a "friendly" thread. I guess I'm not a controversial person, never have liked it. I think everyone has their right to their own opinion. That being said, I took the time to copy and paste the Posting Guidelines. I think everything that was previously discussed seemed to get a little nasty, and it needs to be dropped and we need to move on the what this is all about - support for January Bandsters - the rules are below: (Ps - can we all be friends again? :) )

Posting Guidelines

1. Don't report other people's experiences as truth. Share your own experiences, thoughts, opinions, theories at will.

2. Attack the idea, not the person. Basic online etiquette.

3. When posting, please show respect. We all deserve it.

4. Please take the really personal discussions to PM or e-mail.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
